004201Leporello. Card. . Very Good. N.d. circa 1998. Closed 24.5 by 19 cm. 22 panels with artwork stretching to close to 420 cm. Printed but it would appear unpublished leporello reproducing a panoramic watercolor painting depicting the alleged sordid aspects of Catherine the Great's life including it would appear the plotting against her husband and her sexual escapades among them her final equine moments. The episodic painting though is rife with ambiguity and this is not clarified much by the cryptic captions which are deliberately written as if they were code or perhaps Urdu script. A close examination of these captions will allow one to discern an occasional English word. Still we ourselves were unable to decode the captions to make much sense of them; this is a challenge we leave for the later collector. The panorama is highly Orientalist in its sensibility as if it were the creation of a Mongol modernist. While we do not find the artwork beautiful it has a dream-like quality and it is most definitely arresting perhaps disturbingly so. Light soiling. The Introduction by Robbe-Grillet the well-known French novelist and notorious S and M practitioner is not included. <br/><br/> unknown books
