Il saggio illustra la strategia, articolata e complessa, adottata da Spinoza nell'elaborazione della propria idea di razionalità. Una strategia che muove da due elementi cruciali: il concetto di causa e quello di nozioni comuni. Le nozioni comuni sono la condizione strutturale (le coordinate) della conoscenza razionale, mentre la categoria della causa è successiva, è la forma razionale più adatta a comprendere e descrivere le relazioni che si istaurano tra idee, tra corpi, ma anche tra individui e soggetti sociali. Dunque non la volontà o le idee morali muovono i comportamenti, ma la necessità naturale determina le idee e gli stati affettivi degli uomini, così come le scelte e l'agire dei popoli. Il volume fa risaltare l'originalità di questa posizione, capace, sin dal XVII secolo, di aprire a una riqualificazione, laica e secolarizzata, dei rapporti tra scienza, religione ed etica.
