Aristotelis Categoriae et Liber de Interpretatione Aristotle's Categories with On InterpretationEdited and with an introduction by Lorenzo Minio-PaluelloThis is an edition of two brief works by Aristotle the Categories and On Interpretation presented in the original Greek. The introduction by Oxford classicist Lorenzo Minio-Paluello with information on variant texts and his choices as translator is in Latin. The Categories places every object of human apprehension under one of ten categories; Aristotle intended them to enumerate everything that can be either the subject or the predicate of a proposition. On Interpretation is one of the earliest surviving works in Western philosophical to deal explicitly and formally with the relationship between language and logic. Minio-Paluello's edition was first published in 1949; this reprint dates from 1974. Binding is tight and pages clean and bright although there is minor staining to pag Oxford University Press hardcover

1833000010497Oxonii = Oxford: E Typographeo Academico = University Press 1833. Later edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. 3 2-239 1 pp. Contemporary half sheep over blue cloth with the spine in six compartments black morocco label lettered in gold on the spine spine with gold decorations; all edges decoratively sprinkled. Preface and title page in Latin text in Greek. Published by the Oxford University Press specifically for use in the college classroom. It appears that this edition was issued with several blank leaves on which the student using the book could take notes. Our copy has copious manuscript notes from the late 1830's on these pages. The student signed his name on the free front endpaper: James Glencross Balliol College 1837. Balliol college was a powerhouse of Greek and Latin language learning with Benjamin Jowett having taught there. This is a fascinating example of nineteenth century ancient language education with copious evidence of how a student would interact with an Aristotelian text. Some rubbing to the extremities and the rear hinge starting a bit but binding is secure and firm. E Typographeo Academico [= University Press] hardcover
