184928070New York: Erasmus A. Kutz Sr. 1849. first Edition. Very Good. first Edition. 90 x 63 cm. Engraved trade-card on white glossy coated stock. Surface wear to lettering. Penciled on rear is the following: "May it be preserved through life Presented as a token of remembrance to Josephine Tyler by her friend Aidolaid H. Thimble July 26th 1849 by me. J Tyler." Erasmus A. Kutz Sr. was a New York City instrument maker. Born in England in 1778 he came to America after 1812. He is first listed in the New York City directories in 1818-1820 as a rule maker at 343 Water St. In 1842-1850 he is listed as a nautical and mathematical instrument maker at 180 Water h Newark we think this is the same as Burling Slip & Water. By 1850 the New Jersey census notes the 72 year old Kutz Sr. with no occupation. His son Erasmus A. Kutz Jr. was first listed in the New York City directories from 1839-40 as a rule maker at 2 Stanton from 1850-51 as an instrument maker at 117 Madison and in 1856 as an instrument maker at 91 Monroe.

This trade card describes Erasmus A. Kutz as "Manufacturer & Importer of Mathematical Instruments Corner of Burling Slip & Water St New York." The card is printed on glossy stock with the note "Kelham Sc Fenchurch St. London" lower right indicating it was printed in London. While the trade card shows a multitude of instruments around the border instruments signed by either Kutz are rare - Webster notes one example Smart adds six additional items. The border shows not only mathematical instruments but nautical instruments charts & pilots sextants and octants confirming that this is Kutz Sr.

Trade cards by American scientific instrument manufacturers from this period are rare in our experience. We are aware of one other example of this trade card on blue paper sold with a letterhead dated 1846.

For more information see Charles E. Smart "The Makers of Surveying Instruments in America since 1700" Vol 1 pp 99-100 and the Webster Scientific Instrument Database Online. Nothing in OCLC by this maker/importer. No catalogs or other information in Davis and Dreyfuss. [ Erasmus A. Kutz Sr. ] unknown books

Title engraved by Corn. Cl. Duysend it depicts a standing Erasmus who looks through a telescope into a clouded sky; from a cloud comes the hand of God that bears the 'globus cruciger' corss-bearing orb in German Reichsapfel; the globe represents the earth and he who holds the globe owns the world. The motto on the title suits Erasmus: 'Vidit pervidit risit'. This engraved title was already used by Elsevier for the edition of the Colloquia of 1636. On the last of the preliminary pages a woodcut illustration depicting both sides of a medal of Erasmus on the recto his portrait on the verso his motto: 'Concedo nulli'; around it the legend with Erasmus' interpretation of his motto: 'Mors ultima linea rerum' Condition: Vellum age-tanned and somewhat soiled Note: 'The Colloquia like the Adagia were written over a period of years and constantly enlarged as edition succeeded edition. From their earliest form of short models of Latin conversation and formulae of etiquette composed at Paris in 1497 for the use of some pupils and first printed in 1518 they grew into 'a rich and motley collection of dialogues each a master piece of literary form well-knit spontaneous convincing unsurpassed in lightness vivacity and fluent Latin each one a finished one-act play' Huizinga. The Colloquia full of witty and penetrating observations on ordinary day-to-day happenings as well as on the basic weakness of Church and society are an invaluable mine of information about 16th century customs institutions and social problems. Besides their success as a schoolbook was unrivaled and the stream of editions and translations flowed almost uninterruptedly down to modern times'. Gilhofer & Ranschburg GmbH Catalogue 50 Erasmus published on the 500th anniversary of his birth' Luzern ca. 1967 p. 34 The Colloquia are preceded by a short biography of Erasmus last sentence: 'Discerptus est ab utraque dum utrique studet consulere' and a table of content Collation: 10 A-2E12 Photographs on request hardcover
19091'B. Friars Blackfriars London April 27th. 1785.'. 3pp. folio. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To Mrs. Squire Wragby near Lincoln.' In fair condition aged and worn with Middleton's seal cut away from the second leaf without any loss to text and a number of closed tears along creases. Seventy lines of neatly-written text. A letter filled with pious sentiment beginning: 'Mr. Squire favored us To-day with a Call and it gave us a peculiar Pleasure to see that he is so well recovered from that Fit of Illness in which my Brother & I saw him notwithstanding the uncommonly severe Winter we have since had. But at the same Time I observed Mr. S. lookt so well I thought I discovered great Anxiety in his Face; which led me without knowing the Particulars of the Court's Decision against his Suit in Law to presume on offering a few Hints for his Consideration with a View to reconcile his Mind to the Divine Providence upon a Supposition of the worst. Duty & the Use of Means are our's; but the Event is GOD's.' Exhortation and anecdote follows with Middleton writing midway through the letter: 'I hope Mrs. Squire will have Grace to exercise a good Understanding with which She is so eminently blessed in reasoning scriptorally & consequently wisely upon the present as well as all other the Vicissitudes of this mortal Life; remembering that there is a Design & a Voice in every Affliction we meet with. The Design through GOD's LOve is our Good. The Voice is To sit more loose in Your Affections to the perishing Things of Tme & Sense which at most are Your's & mine but for a little While .'. The postscript reads: 'Mrs. Middleton begs a Tender of her Compliments <to> You and the Miss Squires.' 'B. Friars [ Blackfriars ], London, April 27th. 1785.' unknown

Later full calf; gilt lined flat spine with label; front hinge starting from top; wear to edges and corners; marbled endpapers; title page backed; pages closely trimmed with some loss. Willems: "Il y a deux editions differents sous cette date. On reconnaitra la plus jotie des deux a la p. 269 cotee par erreur 169; dan la seconde la p. 285 est chiffree 185." This copy has neither error. However "Les Elzevier d'Amsterdam ont donne trois autres editions de ces Colliques meme format et meme pagination en 1662 1668 et 1677." Given the loss at the beginning of this volume it is possible that a 1650 title page could have been attached to another edition. Unfortunately this copy also has a 3 pp. index not 2 pp. as Willems states existed in the four editions with this pagination. While Willems may have erred in regard to the index there are only a few lines of print on the third page it cannot be stated with certainty which edition the text of this copy is from. Hard Cover. Tafeln Halbledereinband der Zeit; Rücken erneuert frisches Exemplar. First Edition! Sir Erasmus Wilson 1809-1884 a pupil of Hebra distinguished himself first in anatomy and was elected member of the Royal College of Surgeons but soon decided in spite of the prejudice against specialism in England to devote himself to dermatology. His contributions were many. He described trichorrexis nodosa erythema nodosum universal exfoliative dermatitis. His outstanding nosologic feat here was the assembly of the various manifestions of lichen planus into the category of a single disease; this he first described and named 1869. His suggestions of the addition of benzoic acid as a preservative for ointments introduced benzoated ointments. His chief works of the Skin 1842 which went through at least six editions. His writings on the care of the skin for laymen were credited with having made the bath popular in England.
