Erasmus' Colloquies are a collection of dialogues or skits on a wide variety of subjects which began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for his own pupils. The first official version of 1518 was described as "a collection of formulae and conversational passages." Notable for its insightful commentary on various aspects of human life and society the work showcases Erasmus' wit and humor. With sections addressing topics such as manners education and theological debates often through sparkling exchanges between different characters. Written by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus commonly known in English as Erasmus a Dutch Christian humanist Catholic priest and theologian educationalist satirist and philosopher. He is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the Northern Renaissance. Translated by Nathan Bailey an English philologist and lexicographer. Edited with notes from Rev. E. Johnson. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and age toning to the endpapers. First Portuguese edition translated by Henrique Xavier Baeta. This is a translation of Darwin's Zoonomia and part of his Materia medica. Baeta took his bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Coimbra then his PhD in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. In 1800 he came to Lisbon because in Coimbra he was being persecuted and began to begin the exercise of his profession. Bound without half- titles in first two volumes a neatly deaccessioned institutional duplicate with bookplate shadows on pastedowns and small gilt signet stamped in corner of upper boards joints and edges a bit rubbed with short crack at crown of one joint else a very good set. Second complete edition after the first edition of 1758-60 and an 1805 abridgement by Lacey. The third volume consists of an appendix printing letters documents and texts by or relating to Erasmus and does not appear to have been issued with all sets. OCLC reports approximately as many sets with the third volume as without it. Jortin's work is indebted to that of Jean Le Clerc. At the back of this book is the essay by Erasmus De ratione studii pp. 161-198.<br /> <br /> William R. Whittingham 1805-1879 graduated the General Theological Seminary in 1825 and was named librarian of the newly founded school. He later accepted a position on the faculty in 1836. Whittingham was consecrated the fourth Bishop of Maryland in 1840 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Whittingham's important theological library became the core of the Maryland Diocese library which was in turn transferred to the General Theological Seminary. The ownership signature of Bishop Whittingham is dated 1879 a very late acquisition for him. Provenance: William R. Half-inch split to front joint at bottom else remarkably stiff and sturdy. Colonia is the stated place of publication but other sources say Venice. 206 pp. First Edition in Italian of the most famous work of Erasmus of Rotterdam. This work was translated probably by Raffale Pastore known as a translator of various Greek and Latin classics. The book feels marvelous in the hand.
