"As the wan countenance of the lust-worn harlot becomes still more dark and dismal at the sight of a young female fresh and blushing in all the charms of virgin innocence so does the soul of a filthy drunkard experience a quickened hell at the site of a gentleman well drest and breathing the cheerful air of cleanliness and sobriety." The pamphlet is worn with a small one-eighth inch hole in the engraved frontispiece and one page torn through the text due to a careless page separation. This is the first complete American edition an abridged version having been published in 1794. Folding table. 3 vols. 12mo. In 18th century America as it was the age of reason and Enlightenment the colonists needed the justification or rationalization of their disagreement and resultant actions with England citing their immutable rights as Englishmen and quoting the basic English institutions. As the "philosopher of the Enlightenment" Locke's theories and writings were seized upon by the colonists especially with Locke's "doctrine of natural rights" his theories on "life liberty and property" religious toleration and proper representation in government. His writings gave the colonist a firm foundation upon which to base many of their statements. To Locke goes much of the credit for many of the ideas forming the Virginia Declaration of Rights drafted by George Mason. Many of the other states used that constitution as a basis for their own. Locke's advocacy of a "laissez faire" economic policy was shared by Jefferson who agreed with the idea that the "government is best which governs least." Cohen "American Thought" p. 132. The conclusion reached in the "Essay" "that though knowledge must necessarily fall short of complete comprehension it can at least be 'sufficient'; enough to convince us that we are not at the mercy of pure chance and can of some extent control our own destiny" summarizes American intent and beliefs. Most important for the 1st English edition of "A Treatise on Man and the Development of His Faculties" Quetelet's foundational work of social statistics first published in French "Sur l'homme et le développement de ses facultés". This edition contains a new preface by the author to defend his work from objections brought against it subsequent to the publication of the Paris edition of 1835. Quetelet's goal was to understand the statistical laws underlying crime rates marriage rates or suicide rates correlating them with other social factors. "With Quetelet's work . . . a new era in statistics began. It presented a new technique of statistics or rather the first technique at all. This work prepared by a close acquaintance of Locke provides a biographical sketch of Locke; anecdotes about the reception of Locke's report; appendices presenting an authentic description of the Moon; and the text of Locke's successful hoax perpetrated in the NEW YORK SUN in August 1835 which pretended to reveal a discovery that men and animals existed on the Moon. The revelations supposedly reprinted from the actually defunct EDINBURGH JOURNAL OF SCIENCE were so cleverly wrought that for a short time the report was given credence in scientific circles in the United States and Europe. The report was soon denounced as a hoax by the public press and Richard Adams Locke 1800-1871 a reporter for the SUN was identified as the perpetrator of the "ingenious astronomical hoax." Interest in the lunar discoveries increased the SUN'S circulation to more than nineteen thousand the largest of any daily of that time. According to William Gowans who reprinted the story in 1859 Locke's account created such public interest that the owners of the SUN published sixty thousand copies of it in pamphlet form. The pamphlet was published in September 1835 and every copy was sold in less than a month. Nevertheless the 1835 printings are rare and only a handful of copies survive. This is the famed educator Dr. George Robert Parkin a biographer of Sir John A. Macdonald and Headmaster of Upper Canada College. He has signed the inscription with initials and the fep proper as 'G.R. Parkin 1888'. The feps are yellowed but otherwise interiors pages are clean and white. A lovely association copy of the first biography of Washington which Weems revised and republished for several years after its initial publication circa 1800. Locke's Sidney's and Shaftesbury's letters were part of that inheritance. The correspondence between Locke and the others is printed in Corr. iii et seq.: "the dates of some of those from Locke are wrong" ibid. iii. 40n. the originals are now in the Bodleian Library. Bärtgis published an English edition in 1801. Written by the man who invented the enduring myth of Washington and the cherry tree which did not appear until the book's fifth edition in 1806. A very good crisp uncut copy in original state other than having been resewn. Our New York imprint was "printed from plates cast from the same type forms" as the Chicago edition Wessen. It touches the major events of Lincoln's life and career devoid of some of the more romantic mythology e.g. Ms. Rutledge but including the far-fetched notion that Lincoln deliberately lost the 1858 Senatorial race in order to enhance his presidential prospects. <br/> Howes calls it the "most authentic of Lincoln campaign biographies." Lincoln's short-lived career in Congress is reviewed including his opposition to the Mexican War and his support of the Wilmot Proviso.
