It is intended also by giving on the one hand an account of the physical conditions which obtained within this immense territory prior to and at the time of that discovery and of the interesting and adventurous explorations through which those condition were made known and on the other hand an account of the wonderful changes brought about by the sudden intrsuion into it of a vigorous civilized people to afford my readers some idear of the impulse given to western settlement by that discoveru an impulse which was soon afterwards strongly felt both in Australia and New Zealand.
