The Whole work Compleat to which is Added the Author's Treatise of Nature and Grace being a Consequence of the Principles contained in the search Translated by T. Taylor Brown leather heavily bumped and rubbed on edges and corners. Spine is remarkably solid with gilt raised bands and embossed leaves. The book appears that it may have been rebound many years back due to the good condition of the leather on the spine vs. the boards. However there appears to be original endpapers. Bookplate on front pastedown of a J. P. Fallofield. Endpapers and several pages in are chipped on edges. Damp stains on edges. Paper used in preface is different and of higher quality than the remainder of the test. Two pages in the preface are close to being loose. Heavy foxing throughout with some pages being far more affected than others. This is a remarkable book by a man who's books were banned. Size: Folio - over 12' - 15' tall.</p> Thomas Bennet hardcover

Overall a very good copy.<br> <br> Malebranche is now recognized as a major figure in the history of philosophy occupying a crucial place in the Rationalist tradition of Descartes Spinoza and Leibniz. The Search after Truth is his first longest and most important work. As a leading Cartesian Malebranche argued in The Search after Truth 1675 and the Dialogues on Metaphysics and on Religion 1688 that our ideas provide no direct certain knowledge of bodies but that instead we "see all things in god." This divinely ordained occasionalism provided for the apparent regularity of the natural world without appealing to any genuine causal interaction among things. The subject of this scarce satirical work is Pierre Rousseau 1716–1785 founder of the Journal encyclopédique one of the most influential Enlightenment periodicals in Europe. Originally from Toulouse he had settled in Bouillon in what is now Belgium under the protection of the Duke of Bouillon and from there published his journal which played a leading role in spreading Enlightenment ideas across Europe. This work purports to expose the flaws and misdeeds of Rousseau and his wife under literary and moral scrutiny. The genre of satire against journalists and editors was common in 18th century literary culture often driven by rivalries religious objections to their philosophies or personal enmity. At the time publishing in Amsterdam was a traditional method for controversial French language publications avoiding any censorship or prosecution that they might face if printed in France. Hardback in quarter leather with mottled boards. Gilt decoration and title to spine. Very light rubbing to edges. Small and neat previous owner's ink inscription to verso of front endpaper. A section from the lower corner of p.271 in volume I also lost not affecting text. A crisp clean copy internally. Spines worn and cracked; joints split but still just about holding. Chipping to head and tail caps with an old small tail repair to volume II. Moderate wear and bumping to boards. Good overall.
