elala3432Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey 1769. First Edition in French translated by Jesuit priest Jean Nicolas Grou 1731-1803 of Plato’s last work left uncompleted at his death. As opposed to the ideal state described in his Republic the Laws presents a practical plan for a ‘second best’ constitution and state. “Under it the elite may possess modest estates and private families are allowed. The lower ranks of society now have some political rights and powers though careful regulations ensure that they will not attain political control. The rulers though decently educated are not required to be philosophers. The women are not warriors. Much of the Laws is a sort of Blue Book in which detailed rules and regulations are laid down for the conduct of elections legal proceedings religious ceremonies markets schools and irrigation…In its concrete legal social and administrative prescriptions…students of Greek history and politics can find a good deal of interest. For inevitably Plato sometimes copies and often just improves on laws regulations codes customs and expedients already obtaining in Athens or other Greek states. Political actualities can be read through Plato’s political recommendations…â€. Emmant James Kern Feibleman Francis S. Haserot and others.
"Alexis Saint‐Leger Leger 1887-1975 was a triple image. As Alexis Leger he was a professional French diplomat of impressive suavity and limited accomplishment. As himself he was a gracious aristocrat who preferred his own company to the glitter of the salon. As St.‐John Perse pronounced SIN‐jin he was a major poet of candescent belief in the indestructibility of humanity. The Nobel Prize only confirmed the rapturous regard Mr. Perse's peers expressed for him as one of the most original of contemporary poets. His audacious use of pungent imagery and arcane symbolism set him apart as did his celebration of the inexhaustible power of life to triumph over disaster His language was ambiguous lyric and cadenced studded with subtle metaphors and sprinkled with delicate melodies more discernible by the ear than the eye. Among poets writing in English Archibald MacLeish T. S. Eliot and Louise Varese were drawn to Mr. Perse and influenced by him." NY Times Obit.
"Felix M. Morley 1894=1982 was an educator and journalist who won the Pulitzer Prize. Mr. Morley won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing in 1936 three years after he was named editorial page editor of The Washington Post. In his career he was president of Haverford College and the first correspondent in China for The Baltimore Sun. He was a brother of the author and poet Christopher Morley who died in 1957. Felix Morley who held a doctorate in political science and was the author of seven books on economics and politics was born in Haverford Pa. His family moved to Baltimore in 1900. He was graduated in 1915 from Haverford College. In 1915 Mr. Morley went to Europe and became an ambulance driver for the British Red Cross. He returned to the United States a year later to become a reporter for The Philadelphia Ledger. In 1917 he became a Washington correspondent for the United Press news agency. Two years later he won a Rhodes scholarship and studied for two years at Oxford after which he studied at the London School of Economics on a Hutchinson Research Fellowship. Several years later he won a Guggenheim Fellowship to study the organization of the League of Nations. In 1922 Mr. Morley joined The Baltimore Sun working in several Far East bureaus and in 1925 becoming the newspaper's first correspondent in China. He left The Sun in 1929 complaining that H.L. Mencken was exercising 'excessive influence' on editorial policy. From 1929 to 1931 he was director of the Geneva office of the League of Nations Association of the United States. After serving as president of Haverford College from 1940 to 1945 Mr. Morley returned to journalism working as a Washington correspondent for Barron's Weekly a position that he held until retiring from full-time newspaper or magazine work in 1954." - NY Times Obit. In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Huntington Cairns. Illustrated by Hans Erni. Plato’s The Trial and Death of Socrates is a foundational text in Western philosophy that explores the ethical and political implications of Socrates' final days. Comprising four dialogues—Euthyphro Apology Crito and Phaedo—the work examines the nature of justice the role of the individual in society and the immortality of the soul. In Apology Socrates defends his philosophical mission as a divine duty challenging the moral complacency of Athenian society. Crito presents a powerful argument for obeying the law even in the face of injustice while Phaedo offers a vision of death as a release of the soul to a higher realm. Together these dialogues portray Socrates not only as a martyr for truth but also as a model of rational integrity whose commitment to philosophy transcends the fear of death. French translation of The Laws a series of twelve Platonic dialogues written towards the end of his life. Grou a Jesuit fled to Holland when his order was suppressed in France and it was there that these Dialogues were published. Later he returned to Paris and adopted the alias Leclaire remaining there until the Revolution drove him into a second exile in England. As well as Platonic translations Grou published theological works of a popular nature including The Spiritual Life: A Comprehensive Manual for Catholics Seeking Salvation. The publisher includes a dedication to the then-living philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. This set also includes a 1778 edition of La Science de Bonhomme Richard Sabin 78111 which is a French version of Benjamin Franklin's The Way to Wealth. This work includes the sayings of Poor Richard as well as the interrogation of Benjamin Franklin relating to the Stamp Act Pennsylvania's new constitution and the interrogation of William Penn by parliament. Franklin spent a good deal of time in France and was well-liked there. The Way to Wealth was his most popular work and though it first appeared in England in 1757 it was the French translation originally published in 1777 that first included his commentary on British taxation of the American colonies. Herein he presages the colonists' discontent with being taxed and ordered about by a foreign power. Marc-Michel Rey / Chez Ruault, Libraire unknown books
