1826D32<p>Well-worn leather-bound set complete in 11 volumes. 1826. Fair. All covers worn; significant fading to gilt spines cover decorations and marbled edges. Spine beginning to detach from volume one. All volumes lack leather spine labels except VII. Sporadic notes and marginalia throughout the set as well as light foxing. This is a mixed set as volume three was acquired independently: its leather is darker and it has library bookplates to front pastedown and front flyleaf. It may have a different binding but it is from the same edition as the other volumes. Despite this set's numerous cosmetic issues it remains structurally sound and readable. Text is in Greek and Latin. We will be happy to answer any questions and provide additional photos as needed. Plato’s 'Dialogues on Love and Friendship'—comprising Lysis Symposium and Phaedrus—offer a philosophical exploration of the nature purpose and transformative potential of human relationships. In Lysis Plato raises fundamental questions about the essence of friendship ultimately leaving the concept unresolved thus inviting continued reflection on the basis of interpersonal bonds. The Symposium presents a series of speeches culminating in Socrates’ recounting of Diotima’s teaching which elevates erotic love eros from physical desire to a philosophical longing for eternal truth and beauty. In Phaedrus love is portrayed as a form of divine madness that when rightly guided leads the soul toward recollection of the Forms and a higher understanding of the self. Together these dialogues construct a nuanced vision of love and friendship as ethical and metaphysical forces that can either enslave or liberate the soul depending on their alignment with reason and the pursuit of the good. Jacket now in Brodart for preservation. A good strong hardcover copy. Previous owner's name neatly penned to the ffep gutter of Prof John Michelsen dept of Philosophy at UVic. Text is clean. 'There are innumerable translations of Plato's Republic into English the Jowett and the Cornford being the best known. But Professor Allan Bloom's version will be the only available translation which attempts to be strictly literal. . . Grou a Jesuit fled to Holland when his order was suppressed in France and it was there that these Dialogues were published. Later he returned to Paris and adopted the alias Leclaire remaining there until the Revolution drove him into a second exile in England. As well as Platonic translations Grou published theological works of a popular nature including The Spiritual Life: A Comprehensive Manual for Catholics Seeking Salvation. Paginates by leaves 1 leaf=2 pages: 127 plus 1 leaf index. 2 blanks front and back look like they are from the old rebind. Title page and last page of index are pages with the most wear: title page has old ownership stamp and a few stains. All other pages are near fine or fine. Paper is excellent quality: supple lightly toned not fragile. Binding is sound. Front blank endpaper has two inscriptions in Spanish. One is dated April 23 1880. The other is earlier and signed by Alfredo Chavero same as ownership stamp. No other writing or markings. A small book approximately 4.5 x 3.25 inches. Please see scans of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: I think first edition of this collection is 1530 see OCLC: 925369798.
