Il saggio analizza l'immagine dello Stato moderno nella filosofia della storia di Hegel e più in generale ricostruisce la nozione hegeliana di politica e la funzione che la storia svolge rispetto ad essa. Nel quadro di questa indagine, l'autrice va oltre le versioni edite delle lezioni hegeliane, e prende in esame i manoscritti, che gli allievi di Hegel hanno redatto sulla base delle lezioni. Accanto all'idea classica di Hegel sull'autonomia dell'individuo e della forza dello Stato, emerge dalle nuove fonti il confronto con la contingenza dell'epoca: dalle difficoltà politiche in Francia, al bisogno di conciliare i diversi interessi dello Stato moderno, fino alla necessità, attualissima, di rintracciare una tradizione oggettiva.
