This article is recognized as one of five by Peirce constituting the modern founding of semiotic the general theory of signs. Peirce was a physicist mathematician and philosopher. He founded pragmatism and revolutionized logic. Bertrand Russell called Peirce "one of the most original minds of the later nineteenth century" and "the greatest American thinker ever."
