18199897Albany NY: Printed by G.J. Loomis & Co 1819. First Edition. 300pp. Sextodecimo 14.5 cm Full sheep with gilt bands and title on the backstrip. Near fine. Sporadic foxing throughout. Joshua Bradley was the pastor of churches in Rhode Island Connecticut Vermont and New York he first affirmed and later renounced freemasonry creating no small stir among his former masonic brethren. As a mason he published a defense of freemasonry in 1816 while pastoring in Vermont. At that time Bradley was a member of Newport Royal Arch Chapter and Grand Chaplain of the Washington Encampment of Newport. However about a decade later while preparing to defend freemasonry against the rising tide of antimasonry he altered his views and abruptly did an about face renouncing freemasonry in the light of the antimasonic movement then causing chaos in the country citing the murder of William Morgan as one reason. Old light horizontal crease a bit of light staining in the bottom corner barely affecting the image and a neatly repaired tear on the left side affecting about 1" of the image but barely visible in the image very good or better. Tipped in to a 16" x 20" mat with two small pieces of cloth tape attached to the verso mat with very light foxing and three small areas of label residue on the blank verso. A lovely image. First edition 8vo pp. 321 1; frontispiece 66 illustrations from photographs; original pictorial yellow cloth stamped in red and blue on upper cover and spine; front hinge a little tender otherwise a very good bright copy. This copy with a presentation from Parsons: "Mrs. Thomas H. Baxter with the compliments of the author." Laid in is a two-page autograph letter signed from Parsons to Mrs. Baxter dated Feb. 7 1903 with the original mailing envelope which reads: "I have just obtained from the publishers a copy of my little book on China and take great pleasure in sending it to you . 'All the world's a stage' but the stage for the next world drama is I think the Orient and therefore it is interesting to study the players. At any rate this little book is a record of the most interesting experience that I ever expect to have." "Parsons . accepted the direction of a survey of some 1000 miles of railway in China primarily on the line from Hankow to Canton. The party passed through the then 'closed province' of Hu-nan and the success of the entire venture depended not alone on engineering skill but primarily upon the ability of the leader of the expedition to meet the extremely difficult diplomatic problems involved. Nevertheless the mission was accomplished and the small group of American engineers to the surprise of many of their friends returned in safety" DAB. That very same railroad line is still in use today. Parsons 1859-1932 founded Parsons Brinckerhoff Inc. one of the largest American civil engineering firms. Written during a time when there was increasing demand for captivity narratives from North Africa this book is now understood to be a highly fictionalized account of a well documented historical event so it is not used as a historical reference. However it does provide sociological insight into the norms of the time as some give this genre of fiction credit for helping shape cultural views of the era. Water stain affecting upper corner of last 4-5 leaves then fades. Closed tear on pp.17-18 affecting text. Images show all. Paginates: blank frontis 108 blank. Notes: This is a fictional account likely inspired by "Sufferings of Mrs. Mary Velnet" 1804; and "Sufferings of Mrs. Maria Martin" 1807. The publisher James Walden another fictional character first produced this in 1820. This is therefore the first edition second issue. Thomas McDade called tales of this type "Lurid Literature." I agree. More notes: This is the first pirated edition. Here the spelling and punctuation was improved over the Walden text but it is otherwise the same. I have listed an 1821 version of the Walden book as well so you may compare. Except for the colored frontis this has lower production values. Good. frontis pp 108 Almost certainly spurious account of the 'shipwreck and sufferings' of Mrs Eliza Bradley supposedly autobiographical but borrowed in large part from Captain James Riley's 1816 account of his capture and exploits on the 'coast of Barbary'. The second Boston edition of 1823 bound in quarter roan over marbled paper covered wooden boards marbling heavily worn close to foreedge on upper board. Browning to paper internally though the crudely effective woodcut frontispiece is present and intact. Foxing throughout. Central four leaves of the first gathering loose. Ex-library with bookplates some foxed and stained cut to one leaf not affecting text. A good copy but lacking the frontispiece. . Imprints 574. This was issued both in the US and UK. Robinson in her Wayward Women notes that the earliest issue of this that she could find was Boston 1821. Bradley and her husband left England in the Spring of 1818. Bradley was the only woman aboard the Sally when it was blown onto the Barbary coast of north-west Africa. She and the survivors were captured by a passing caravan and while the men were sent off to be sold to the British counsel in Mogadir Eliza was held in the village were she spent the next five months until she was reunited with her husband and returned to England. Bradley also known as Mrs A. Murray Smith. Profusely illustrated a frontispiece and with engravings on almost every single page and with one folding plate. Illustrated by W. Hatherbell H. M. Paget and Francis S. Walker. Paget was a British illustrator and painter known for his portraits and for his scenes from history and mythology. Walker was an Irish illustrator who painted landscapes and portraits providing illustrations to various travel books. Collated complete. In a full cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Light fading to the spine and to the extremities. Minor marking to the boards. A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The odd spot to the fore edge.
