This book is a fine specimen of such characteristic work from the Rocolet printers. This copy is exemplary for its royal provenance; this church history work which would have been presented at court to Louis XIV and the dauphin the kings son Louis of France 1661-1711. The dauphin would have been about 14 years old at the time of this edition. Louis XIV and other royals often had works printed and bound for presentation in the court and gave them to special members in their circle. The title has an unidentified impression monogram GDV in lower right corner probably dating to the 18th century. First edition and second volume of four containing Socrates Scholasticuss history of the Christian Church; this title part of a en ecclesiastical series by Rocolet published in 1675 and 1676; a reissue was made in Holland in 1686. This set is frequently found as the singular volume in usual institution catalogs. Louis Cousin was the translator of this great compilation corpus on church history written by the fifth century Church Father Socrates which continued the great magnum opus of his forefather Eusebius of Caesarea. Among Cousins law and theological acumen he was an academician royal censor and president of the court of currencies Cour des Monnoyes. This translation was highly regarded by his contemporaries as translations from the Greek of Church Father writings were becoming common in the ecclesiastical language of the Western Church. Pierre Rocolet the printer by appointment for the city government was active in Paris from 1640 until 1662 when his son-in-law Damien Foucault succeeded him in the business. Importantly this work is one of the last that Foucault would produce under the workshops name. He died in 1675 and his widow Anne Bonjean succeeded him until 1686 and then a son Hilaire Foucault continued until 1723. The Rocolet workshop was known for collaborating with select binders and gilders to producing luxurious decorated bindings which dominated the French booksellers markets in the mid and late seventeenth century. La riproposizione organica dei testi originali della Scuola cirenaica con traduzione a fronte vuole oggi rappresentare un duplice tentativo: essere un utile strumento per tutti coloro che desiderano controntarsi con le fonti dì una delle scuole socratiche più affascinanti e nei secoli fraintese e, al contempo, fornire l'opportunità per una rilettura che vada oltre la mera prospettiva filologica. Ricchi e numerosi sono gli spunti di riflessione che le posizioni edoniste dei filosofi di Cirene ancora oggi porgono agli studiosi, spesso sotto forma di provocazioni, che partendo dall'ambito etico giungono a ribadire la centralità del dato fruitivo all'interno di un'estetica fortemente legata alle polarità di "piacere" e "percezione". Attraverso la persistenza di tali tematiche e l'individuazione delle loro radici nella filosofia antica emerge come i grandi temi dell'estetica contemporanea, messi alla prova quotidianamente dal confronto con gli oggetti, con i sensi, con i giudizi, con la circoscrizione del concetto stesso dì piacere, possano attingere elementi e stimoli di grande ricchezza.

br. Il dialogo è oggi rinvio costante di varie discipline umanistiche e perno di molte delle cosiddette pratiche filosofiche. Frequente è anche il rinvio, da parte di autori e filoni odierni, a "Socrate" come testimone di una "modalità dialogica del comunicare", creduta oggi più che mai necessaria e utile. Si cerca qui anzitutto di verificare in modo non generico, ma preciso, che cosa si possa intendere per "dialogo" rinviando sia alla nascita, tra fine V e inizio IV sec. a.C., del genere letterario del "sokratikòs lògos", cui gli stessi Dialoghi platonici appartengono, sia a filoni novecenteschi che fanno perno o sul dialogo (pensiero dialogico) o sul 'metodo socratico' (scuola nelsoniana) o sullo scambio dialogico stesso (Morineau e teoria della mediazione). Son poi ripresi alcuni dei 'Socrate' del '900, soprattutto di quei pensatori (Arendt, Patocka, Hadot, Nussbaum) che, da punti di vista e con intenti diversi, valorizzano il metodo dialogico, come espressione propria della natura umana, metodo del ragionare filosofico o mezzo di una formazione democratica. Nella II parte ("Esercizi dialogici") son esaminati e meditati 20 passi centrali dei Dialoghi platonici, nella presupposizione - se ne sia conscio no - che sia stato e sia tuttora "il Socrate di Platone" a far storia in filosofia. Si cerca per tale via di rispondere ad alcune domande di ricerca: quanto e cosa sappia chi interroga nel dialogo socratico; per quale ragione, per quale fine e con che tipo di domande lo faccia; quali effetti cognitivi ed emozionali inducano nell'interlocutore il domandare e confutare; se vi sia e quale sia la differenza fra pensare e dialogare; quale sia l'esito finale del dialogo. Ciò non solo per chiarire (storicamente) come operasse il dialogo socratico originario, sciogliendo consolidati fraintendimenti in merito, ma anche (teoreticamente) per mostrarne l'attualità quale "pratica filosofica per eccellenza", da potersi iniziare proprio meditando i testi - quelli dialogici di Platone - che ne fecero non per caso la propria base: non solo letteraria, ma "filosofica".

"Il Simposio di San Silvestro" si presenta quale dialogo modellato sul Simposio platonico, offrendo significative diversità rispetto all'illustre originale. La più intrigante: Diotima partecipa in prima persona alla conversazione, pienamente riconosciuta dagli altri convitati nelle sue capacità intellettuali, designata quale "madrina di concetti". Ella assume con naturalezza il ruolo di guida nella discussione quale personaggio centrale del confronto speculativo: paziente mediatrice, dotata di ironia, abile nel condurre i ragionamenti, ma senza dimenticare le ragioni del cuore. Un'altra innovazione è rappresentata da due figure femminili, Hermia e Helena, accanto a Diotima: le tre donne sono amiche e affettuose, ma molto diverse di carattere, ironiche e sincere. Infine emerge il livello più propriamente helleriano di quest'opera, che tuttavia non è scisso dal primo: l'Autrice, affrontando il tema dei sentimenti e la teoria dei bisogni, si sofferma sulla responsabilità di essi e delle azioni che ne scaturiscono, e dedica molte pagine alla loro funzione sociale. Ne risulta un cammino di riscoperta e insieme di re-invenzione di interrogativi teoretici e pratici con l'apporto innovativo di "una voce di donna", riconosciuta ormai come Maestra, la cui abbondante produzione ci ha accompagnato lungo tutto il Novecento.
