This is an interesting collection of the miscellaneous scientific writings and experiments of Francis Bacon 1561-1626 appended with his utopian work "A New Atlantis." The book first appeared the year after his death edited and published by William Rawley but went through a number of editions reflecting the popularity of his writings. While Bacon would be well educated in his early years as the youngest son in his family he would be left without land money or position upon his father's death in 1579. However thanks to his tremendous intellect and political skills he would have a very successful political and intellectual career and would prosper under James I. Among his many accomplishments would be obtaining the post of attorney general but bribery charges would bar him from ever holding public office again. He would publish a good deal in his later years and legend suggests that his intellectual curiosity would eventually cost him his life when he caught chill after experimenting with the impact of cold temperatures on decaying meat. More recently it has been suggested that his death was caused by "inhaling remedial substances" in an effort to improve his health. ODNB. STC 1173.</p> William Lee,

1648601541648. Amsterdam Elzevier 1648 12 ° mit gestochenem Titel 36 612 48 pp.; 87 pp. Pergamenteinband d.Zt. mit neuerem Rückenschildchen; St.a.Tit. Scarce Latin edition of Bacon's celebrated work published the same year as the Leiden edition. First published posthumously in the year of Bacon's death 1626 Sylva Sylvarum is a an aptly-described "miscellany of topics" dealing with the prolongation of life the natural world and the wisdom of the ancients arranged in 1000 numbered paragraphs. William Rawley Bacon's secretary chose to addend the unfinished manuscript of New Atlantis to the former work if only for convenience's sake. Bacon's utopian population famously practice eugenic breeding and are committed fundamentally to the pursuit of scientific learning. Having enjoyed five English editions by 1639 the present work attests to Bacon's popularity beyond British shores; Elzevir in Amsterdam and Hackium in Leiden brought out simultaneous Latin translations in 1648. Hackium's re-engraved title page interestingly follows the original of 1626 rather closely including a globe with outlines of the continents. Die Naturbeschreibung in zehn Centurien mit Naturbeobachtungen verschiedenster Art. Der letzte Teil "Novus Atlas Opus imperfectum cum praefatione W. Rawley" "contains a description of the Island of Bensalem on which there is a cooperative college of Science called Salomon's House . it ranks among the bestknown and most delightful Utopian writings in the world and has been perhaps the most influential" DSB I 375 unknown
