Hoover was one of the first graduates of the new Stanford University in 1895 ad was connected to it later; located at Stanford is the Hoover Instituion a think tank started by Hoover and the Herbert Hoover House built in 1919 in Stanford now the residence of the president of Stanford. The Reef Points Gardens Library was an extensive horticulrural and landscape architecture research collection established by Beatrix Farrand at her estate Reef Point in Bar Harbor Maine. She later donated the vast majority of the library's contents to the University of California Berkeley. Oversized blue cloth is mildly rubbed the spine gilt is dulled. Pictorial eps. These poems most of which were written during the last month of 1913 and the first month of 1914 have been collected and printed to please the author's mother to whom this book is dedicated. The Photogravures are from the photographs of the original clay models made during that time. There are four illustrations: Portrait of My Father Cast in One Mould The Jester and Mountains of the Moon. They show the first work of this kind the author has ever attempted and the author presents them here owing to the kindly encouragement he has received from America's world-famed sculptor Gutzon Borglum. John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum March 25 1867 - March 6 1941 was an American sculptor best known for his work on Mount Rushmore. He is also associated with various other public works of art across the U.S. including Stone Mountain in Georgia the statue of Union General Philip Sheridan in Washington D.C. as well as a bust of Abraham Lincoln which was exhibited in the White House by Theodore Roosevelt and which is now held in the United States Capitol crypt in Washington D.C. William Bacon Scofield was born at Hartford Conn.1865-1930. He entered Harvard with the Class of l887 but remained in college less than three years and then attended law school for one year. After leaving college he followed his father's career by entering the newspaper business becoming reporter and later city editor of the Worcester Evening Gazette. In. 1895 he became treasurer of the Worcester Thread Company and in 1903 joined with other Worcester men in forming the Crompton-Thayer Loom Company. After this business was sold out in 1907 Mr. Scofield devoted most of the remainder of his life to writing and- to sculpture. He studied for several years under the well known sculptor Gutzon Borglum and maintained a studio on Front Street. He became a noted artist. He published two books of poems "Verses" in 1914 and "A Forgotten Idyll" in 1921. Much of his best poetry was contributed to Harvard Class reunions and to the local newspapers especially during the period of the late War. He was elected to the American Antiquarian Society in 1927 and His will left trusts funds of nearly one million dollars eventually to benefit several Worcester institutions. He was married December 31 1919 to Myrtis S. Sigourney Harrington who survived him. Privately Printed hardcover
