18721423941872. BACON J. The Theory of Colouring. Being an Analysis of the Principles of Contrast and Harmony in the Arrangement of Colours with Their Application to the Study of Nature and Hints on the Composition of Pictures. viii 58 pp. illustrated with 6 colour plates plus 48 pp. of advertisements for artists' materials. 8vo 183 x 120 mm bound in publisher's blue pebbled cloth stamped in blind title gilt on front cover a.e.g. London: George Rowney 1872. Second revised edition. A standard work of which Herbert says: "In the next generation of British writers one continues to feel a modern sense of color that is usually regarded as a prerogative of French Impressionists. The manual by Bacon stresses binary and triadic color harmonies unencumbered by the long disquisitions on aesthetics that mark most French treatises and its plates although in rather conservative figurative imagery show color opposites directly opposed and three color harmonies that look forward to Neo-Impressionism and Fauvism." Sermones Fideles the Latin translation of Bacon's essays was first published in 1641 and this second edition has been completely reset. The text here consists of 62 essays. William Hazlitt remarked of Bacon "It is not easy to make room for him and his reputation together. This great and celebrated man in some of his works recommends it to pour a bottle of claret into the ground of a morning and to stand over it inhaling the perfumes. So he sometimes enriched the dry and barren soil of speculation with the fine aromatic spirit of his genius." Gibson 52a unknown

The scarce catalogue of a superb collection of literature on all aspects of philately. The nucleus of the collection was that formed by John Kerr Tiffany of St Louis which the Earl of Crawford acquired in 1901. "Tiffany included in his collection all separate works journals retail and wholesale price-lists from the smallest to the largest notices of dealers and societies articles on stamp-collecting in non-philatelic magazines works on postal history and music with philatelic or postal titles. In fact he made it his object to obtain every scrap of paper from a single leaf to the largest volume which had any bearing whatever on philately and the Post Office in all languages and from every quarter of the globe." Crawford added substantially to Tiffany's collection and engaged E.D. Bacon to produce this catalogue on which he worked for 10 years the scale of his researches being evident in the numerous detailed annotations especially of the scarcer items. The most important sections of Crawford's British collection were later acquired by King George V. Covers slightly rubbed short tear to rear joint otherwise Good. This work is an account of the valuations of all ecclesiastical benefices who paid the first fruits and tenths annates. The work was originally issued in 1711 and was compiled by John Ecton. Seven editions of the work appeared between 1723 and 1796 under the title 'Liber Valorum et Decimarum'. Bacon changed the name of this work to 'Liber Regis' before making his own additions. The Gentleman's Magazine for 1786 and 1787 discussed this plagiarism in both issues. Ecton was employed in the first-fruits department of the office of Queen Anne's Bounty where he was the receiver of the tenths of the clergy. This work is a comprehensive list of the Benefices in England and Wales that are charged with the payment of the First Fruits and Tenths. Each Diocese is presented in alphabetical order. The First Edition of Bacon's 'Editorial' of this work which has a few additions following Ecton's original work.
