The RARE 1825 Basil Montagu edited edition in a fine contemporary binding signed Proudfoot Binder of full black crushed morocco front cover bordered by single gilt fillet central gilt tooled decoration of the Aldine Dolphin and Anchor trademark of Pickering and Basil Montagu bordered by a gilt fillet and corner emblems the rear cover the same except no central anchor back lettered in gilt marbled end papers top edge gilt with an appropriate period bookplate artist A. Wyon featuring a man writing at his desk in his library while a skeletal figure representing Death in the background plays a xylophone. The Latin inscription on the bookplate reads " stulte hac nocte repetunt animam tuam et quae parasti cuius erunt" This is part of a quotation from the Book of Luke and translates "`Foolish man this night your life is demanded from you; and these preparations--for whom shall they be". The plan shows the extents from Holloway to North Brixton and West India Docks to Holland Park. The whole backed onto linen folds into rust coloured cloth covers with gilt lettering on upper cover. Booklet title "Stranger's Guide to London" pp.45 inserted at inner cover behind this an uncoloured fold out large scale plan of the City of London c. 14.5 x 40 cm showing the extents from Smithfield down to Blackfriars Bridge and Aldgate across to Lincoln's Inn. Spine of booklet perished contents loose. Except for some light spotting to linen verso both the map and the covers in very good condition. The map appears in a number of formats. Hyde lists 10 of these some of which went into a number of editions. This example has most in common with No. 160.
