Clean pages . 644pp During the First World War the Royal Navy had the daily task of protecting vast amounts of cross-Channel shipping as it trundled from Dover/Folkestone across to Calais/Boulogne/Dunkirk. The Channel was the lifeline of the British and American armies and any interruption in men or supplies would have been a disaster for the Allied war effort. The Dover Patrol was set up in 1914. There were three main threats to Allied shipping: German submarines surface raiders and minefields. This book describes the measures taken to protect against each threat. For instance at night German submarines often laid mines in strategic places like the entrance to Folkestone harbour. Remember that this was in the era before radar so every morning British minesweepers would have to check routes before any shipping could be cleared for passage. This book is filled with compelling statistics and sheds light on the titanic struggle in which we were engaged nearly a hundred years ago.
