Quando Pirandello scrive che i suoi personaggi sono vivi, sta facendo un'affermazione radicale; vi si potrebbe scorgere un paradosso o una provocazione, ma in realtà, più profondamente, l'autore sta mettendo in causa la relazione tra realtà e rappresentazione. Per comprendere di quale vita vivono i personaggi, occorre dare uno sguardo panoramico alla loro presenza onnipervasiva nelle opere pirandelliane: talvolta sono esseri che si presentano autonomamente alla mente dell'autore domandando di mettere in scena il loro dramma, talaltra sono maschere indossate nel teatro sociale per un riconoscimento intersoggettivo. Che si consideri il mondo del teatro o il teatro del mondo, è indispensabile porre l'accento sulla portata drammatica del vissuto dei personaggi e sulle relazioni che le loro domande intessono con la parabola esistenziale di Pirandello, con i desideri dell'uomo e la soggettività concreta dell'atto di creazione. Mai come nelle pagine pirandelliane la teatralità si dispiega come dispositivo polivoco, che mostra, nelle pieghe della finzione, le contraddizioni della realtà.
