The author's first novel his second book published in America and the first published by Scribner's. Written by Hemingway as a pastiche of the work of Sherwood Anderson. Horace Liveright who published both authors declined to publish this book which he justly supposed would be an insult to Anderson his best-selling author. This circumstance gave Hemingway the convenient excuse he needed to break his contract with Liveright so that he could sign with Scribner's and avail himself of the services of their editor Maxwell Perkins. 19781572<p>This copy of the book is an unbound galley proof version identified on an end paper as "FP 178 Young Hemingway HOKUM only FP proofs 6/15/78". It contains 138 loose numbered pages printed on one side that measure approximately 5 ¾ x 8 ½ inches. The pages are unmarked. The book is in fine condition. For purposes of protecting the unbound book it is contained in a gray paperboard box measuring 9 inches long by 6 inches wide by 2 inches deep.</p><p><strong>"Hokum: A Play in Three Acts" by Morris McNeil and apparently Ernest M. Hemingway </strong>was published in 1978 by The Sans Souci Press in Wellesley Hills. The use of the word apparently before Hemingway's name was a requirement imposed by the Estate of Ernest Hemingway. The verification of Hemingway's co-authorship of this play which was unpublished during Hemingway's lifetime is presented in great detail in William and Dorothy Young's Introduction in the book pages 9 -14. This play may be Hemingway's first major work! This assertion is supported by the words on the copyright page which states that the play was first copyrighted on June 4 1921 - Hemingway's first novel The Sun Also Rises was not published until 1926.</p><p>The illustrations accompanying this description show the Title page the page attesting to the item being a galley proof the copyright page the Publisher's Note stating the requirement for the use of the word apparently and the first page of the Introduction.</p><p>Ernest Miller Hemingway July 21 1899 – July 2 1961 was an American novelist short story writer and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels six short story collections and two non-fiction works. Additional works including three novels four short story collections and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature. Moderate wear and staining to the black cloth boards. Some paper loss to the gilt label on the spine. Previous owner's book plate on the front endpaper. Interior pages are clean.<br /> <br /> Early in 1918 Ernest Hemingway joined the Italian Red Cross and served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. During his time abroad Hemingway had two experiences that affected him profoundly and that would later inspire one of his most celebrated novels A Farewell to Arms. The first occurred on July 8 1918 when a trench mortar shell struck him while he crouched beyond the front lines with three Italian soldiers. Though Hemingway embellished the story over the years it is certain that he was transferred to a hospital in Milan where he fell in love with a Red Cross nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Scholars are divided over Agnes' role in Hemingway's life and writing but there is little doubt that his relationship with her informed the relationship between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms.
