Original green cloth spine with maroon title label lettered in silver motif in red to front board. With the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Hans Tisdall priced 9s. 6d. net.<br /><br />A very good copy the binding firm with a little fading to the spine. Previous owners name and date to the front endpaper; moderate spotting to the opening and final few leaves and far more faintly to the fore-edge with the contents otherwise remaining clean.<br /><br />The dust jacket very good indeed unclipped with some rubbing in places and a couple of tiny nicks to the head of the spine; a bright example of Hans Tisdall's distinctive design.<br /><br />Published a decade after For 'Whom the Bell Tolls' 'Across the River and into the Trees' marked Hemingway's long-awaited return to the novel form. Set in post-WWII Venice it tells the story of Colonel Richard Cantwell and his bittersweet romance with a young Italian countess - a narrative heavily influenced by Hemingway's own infatuation with Adriana Ivancich. Though initially met with harsh critical reception the work has since been re-evaluated for its elegiac tone and its foreshadowing of the themes found in his later masterpiece 'The Old Man and the Sea'. The title famously derives from the final words of Confederate General Stonewall Jackson: "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees." Hemingway a titan of twentieth-century letters was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.</p> Jonathan Cape hardcover

Moderate wear and staining to the black cloth boards. Spine is sun faded. Previous owner's bookplate on the front endpaper. Interior pages are clean. <br /> <br /> Early in 1918 Ernest Hemingway joined the Italian Red Cross and served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I. During his time abroad Hemingway had two experiences that affected him profoundly and that would later inspire one of his most celebrated novels A Farewell to Arms. The first occurred on July 8 1918 when a trench mortar shell struck him while he crouched beyond the front lines with three Italian soldiers. Though Hemingway embellished the story over the years it is certain that he was transferred to a hospital in Milan where he fell in love with a Red Cross nurse named Agnes von Kurowsky. Scholars are divided over Agnes' role in Hemingway's life and writing but there is little doubt that his relationship with her informed the relationship between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley in A Farewell to Arms. The boards are well preserved with firm edges. Boards have minor staining and the spine titling has partially worn away. Previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The binding is sound. The dust jacket is in good condition. The original price of $2.75 is present on the front flap. Heavy chipping and wear to the extremities and flap folds with significant chips missing from the spine ends. Creasing and some paper loss evident on the extremities as well. <br /> <br /> "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Written in 1939 and finished in 1940 the first edition was published in October of that year with a print run of 75000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its civil war. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery deception love and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is certainly one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest novels. A tight near fine copy with some of the usual darkening to the endpapers and in an about very good first issue dust jacket that has some small edge chips light wear and some tears and some extensive and largely unnecessary tape repairs to the verso. Many of the books have new information and prefatory material. This set with 7 of the 9 titles is fine in like dust jackets and will provide hours of reading.
