1856178445Washington.: A.O.P. Nicholson. 1856. Tinted lithograph with added hand colour heightened with gum arabic border with later ink rule 15.1 x 23 cm 19.8 x 26.2 cm sheet lower margin a little ragged minor spotting to the margins but in very good condition. A picturesque view of Macau from Penha hill attractively coloured prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan." 1856. The text notes: "It was from Macao in the days of its opulence that many of the commercial expeditions of the Portuguese were dispatched to Japan; and at Macao too the church of Rome had one of its most powerful ecclesiastical establishments sustained by the dread might of the inquisition which in former times exercised in the east the full force of its dark and cruel discipline. Now however the opulence and enterprise of its merchants are gone and the awful dominion of the haughty ecclesiastics and their bloody tribunal has lapsed into the weak hands of a few impoverished priests who meekly appeal to the pity and barely live upon the bounty of the reduced Portuguese population. " Vol. I p. 299 . (A.O.P. Nicholson). unknown

A pair of views drawn on the spot " From nature" by Wilhelm Heine with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Heine and Brown the artists may be seen conferring in the middle ground of one view. The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew Ryukyu in 1854 where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew annexing the Islands in 1879.

Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about these views: “Picturesque crags studded the hillside…Over it towered a tall crag rent through the centre and surmounted with a square rock like a ruined tower and on a spot commanding a fine view of the bay we found a handsome Cunq-qua in an enclosure planted with trees. A dignitary of some kind welcomed us and we were plied with small cups of excellent tea…” . (A.O.P. Nicholson). unknown

Includes bibliographic Hanseniana Tabula Gratulatoria and an index. 651 pp.

Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. A substantial volume containing a series of twenty-five international papers which were presented to Mogens Herman Hansen on his 60th birthday in August 2000. The wide-ranging essays reflect Hansen's two main areas of research: the community and physical nature of the polis and its political ideology practical politics and law. The majority of the papers which include literary and philosophical perspectives focus on Athens during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. This celebration of Classicism although not aimed at the general reader is ambitious and exuberant with its tone set by the introductory `flourish' of two poems about Hansen. Three German and two French papers; the remaining essays are English. Museum Tusculanum Press hardcover
