An idyllic view of traditional life drawn on the spot "From nature" by Wilhelm Heine with figures after daguerrotypes by Eliphalet Brown prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". The expedition visited the then independent kingdom of Lew Chew Ryukyu in 1854 where famously Perry signed a trade agreement on July 11th. In 1875 Japan posted a military garrison in Lew Chew annexing the Islands in 1879. Perry's Narrative goes into considerable detail about traditional life and customs on Lew Chew Ryukyu. . (A.O.P. It was published in 1856 to accompany the narrative of the Perry Expedition to Japan. This particular view shows American boats mapping the harbor after being expressly denied permission to do so by the Japanese government. The lithograph is in near fine condition. First Edition.
