176283787à La Haye The Hague: Jean Néaulme 1762. Fine. Jean Néaulme à La Haye The Hague 1762 12 x 20 cm 4 volumes reliés Edition dated as the original. According to Dufour: ""Second original Parisian edition printed in Paris by or for Duchesne. It is this octavo edition which served for distributions and gifts made by Rousseau and Mme de Luxembourg."" It contains several corrected passages. According to Mc Eachern ""Bibliography of the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau to 1800"" it could not have been printed before 1764 despite the date of 1762 on the title. It is distinguished from the first edition by the difference in the fleurons on the title page the characters used which are different and some minor details: some of the errors listed in the errata of the first edition have been corrected. This edition does not contain a half-title in volume I conforming to the duodecimo edition. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary full marbled brown calf binding. Decorated smooth spine. Red morocco title labels works of Rousseau and second title and volume labels in brown morocco. Triple fillet frame on the boards with presence of some scuffing. Headcaps of volumes I and IV worn down headcap of volume II partly lacking. Lacking at tail of volume II. A lack along the joint of volume I upper joint of volume II split at tail 2 small lacks along the lower joint of volume III lower joint of volume IV open at head with lacks narrow split to upper joint at head. Upper corners of volumes I and II bumped. Trace of pale dampstain on the frontispiece of volume II especially present on the spine. Volume II from the first leaf to p. 18 trace of pale yellow dampstain at upper right corner. In volume IV a black ink stain on the fore edge showing a visible black line fading to page 35. Otherwise fresh throughout. The first collected edition was published in 1764 and everything suggests that this copy which bears on its title labels: Works of Rousseau was bound to form a set with this edition. 176487730à Paris: Chez Duchesne 1764. Fine. Chez Duchesne à Paris 1764 12.50 x 19.70 cm 4 volumes reliés Parisian counterfeit of the first edition under this title the previous ones were indeed entitled Lettres de deux amans of which the original appeared in 1761. The publisher Duchesne took the liberty of changing the original division of the letters Volume 1: 65 letters volume 2: 48 letters volume 3: 26 letters and volume 4: 24 letters. Title pages in red and black. It is illustrated with a frontispiece by Cochin and twelve fine hors-texte plates engraved by Le Mire with borders by Gravelot. These figures are the same as those of the original edition except the twelfth. In reality this is the first illustrated edition containing these figures because the original edition was published initially without figures a collection of prints being published separately. This edition contains the two prefaces notably the famous second dialogue. There exist two Duchesne editions dated 1764 one octavo more carefully produced and the other duodecimo with substantially different typographical material; thus if the title pages appear similar at first glance they are in fact different the first line is bolder the second line in red is solid and its letters are not composed like the octavo of small circles. Contemporary full brown marbled calf bindings smooth spines decorated with havana and pale green morocco title and volume labels triple gilt rules framing the boards gilt fillets on edges and headcaps marbled endpapers and pastedowns all edges red. Volume I: Headcap partially lacking upper joint cracked at head one lack at tail 4 corners bumped. Volume III: lacks at head and tail 3 corners bumped and lacks at lower edges on upper board. Volume IV: Lacks at tail and head micro crack to upper joint at head 2 tears along lower joint. Set rather fresh one dampstain in margin of frontispiece of volume III some leaves more yellowed. This great sentimental novel enjoyed very lively success from its publication 4000 copies of the original edition were printed and the work had no fewer than 70 editions between 1761 and 1800. Demand became so strong that publishers began renting volumes by the day and even by the hour. The work was placed on the Index in 1806 for offense to church values. The Duchesne edition seems to have had a print run of 750 copies. Chez Duchesne hardcover

The title page of Du Contract sic Social; ou Principes du Droit Politique. carries the drawing by the Swiss artist Benjamin Samuel Bolomey of Justicia with her scales held high in her right hand a pike surmounted with a hat in her left and a cat at her feet engraved on copper by Charles-Ange Boily. The work complete in itself comprises the first part of volume 3 and runs to 202pp followed by a 2pp catalogue of books published by Rey. . . . . . The second part of the volume twice separately paginated comprises Rousseau's essay addressed to Christophe de Beaumont Archbishop of Paris in response to the condemnation of Emile published in May 1762 and identified as Seconde Edition Corrigée par L'Auteur . MDCCLXIV 134pp 2pp book catalogue. This is followed in turn by Arrest de la Cour de Parlement . Extrait des Registres du Parlement du 9 Juin 1762 and also de Beaumont's condemnation of Rousseau's Emile ou de l'Education xxxvi pp. de Beaumont's Mandement against Emile is printed by the Queen's printer C F Simon and dated 1762. . . . . . The 12mo edition of Du Contrat Social appeared six weeks after the first octavo edition and is somewhat scarcer. It exists in variant forms both as part of the collected works here correctly with a half title identifying the volume and the sheet of Rey-published titles following the conclusion and separately bound from what appear to be the same sheets but typically with a different second part. The publishing history is unclear but it's suggested that Rey reacted to the unexpected success of Rousseau's work and either had bound up or sold to another publisher for binding some of the sheets intended for the collection of Rousseau's works he was then publishing. See Conlon Ouvrages Français Relatifs À Jean-Jacques Rousseau 1751-1799 for more detail. . . . . . Title pages printed in red and black with engraved ornaments. 12 full-page engraved plates illustrating the letters. Contemporary calf red edges; clean; calf slightly scuffed. First Edition. Rousseaus epistolary novel later known as Julie or the New Héloïse was first published in 1761 by Marc-Michel Rey in Amsterdam. The novels title translated Letters from two lovers living in a small town at the foot of the Alps is a nod to the history of Héloïse dArgenteuil and Pierre Abélard a medieval story of passion and Christian renunciation. The novel was initially put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. <br/><br/>Although Rousseau wrote it as a novel a philosophical theory about authenticity namely secret principles and feelings and being constituent of ones core identity permeated through it. Rousseau explored autonomy and authenticity as moral values and in turn created in Julie a story of temptation sin and redemption that was easily relatable. According to Historian Robert Darnton there were at least 70 editions in print before 1800. So immensely popular publishers could not print copies fast enough so they rented the book out by the day and even by the hour. The work stirred a strong emotional response from readers and had raised Rousseau to prominence as an author. Worldcat locates 6 copies of this edition in North America. Forced to flee France following the official condemnation of Émile Rousseau sought refuge in Neuchâtel under protection of the King of Prussia. The Council of Geneva soon took a similar stand after Rousseau published a reply to an attack by the Archbishop of Paris Lettre à M. de Beaumont 1763. Rousseau countered by first solemnly renouncing his citizenship and then in the present work written in direct response to Tronchins Lettres Écrites de la campagne bitterly attacking the Council and the Genevan constitution. In 1765 he quit Neuchâtel for England at the invitation of philosopher David Hume. Dufour 232. Tchemerzine X p. 50. 1st Edition. Amsterdam: Marc Michel Rey, 1764. unknown
