Photographs with occasional layout annotations on the versos. <br /> <br /> After a smash debut in London in 1957 at the Royal Court and Palace Theatres the play moved to the Royale Theatre on Broadway in 1958 where it ran for 97 performances between February 12 and May 10. <br /> <br /> Osborne's play written at the behest of Olivier was about an embittered middle-aged music hall performer named Archie Rice. Olivier's presence at the theatre which brought West End London notoriety to a playhouse associated with new and nontraditional drama made British theatre history. <br /> <br /> Photographs 8 x 10 inches. 1940148508Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures 1940. Vintage borderless photograph of Preston Sturges and Muriel Angelus on the set of the 1940 film. Mimeo snipe and "Paramount Photo by G.E. Richardson" stamp on verso. <br /> <br /> Sturges had become a very successful Hollywood screenwriter by the late 1930s and with his screenplay for "The Biography of a Bum" wanted so much to direct the film that he offered to do the job for free. With very few exceptions notably Charlie Chaplin the notion of an established studio writer directing a film was nearly unheard of in Hollywood where writers were typically not even allowed on the set. Only the irresistible cheapness of Sturges' offer made it possible for the film to get made. <br /> <br /> Over the six year period during which the script remained unproduced the title changed to "The Vagrant" then "Down with McGinty" then finally just prior to production to "The Great McGinty." It was not only a success but won Sturges an Oscar for Best Screenplay. More importantly he was allowed to continue as a writer-director with a magnificent career that included one classic after another including "Sullivan's Travels" "The Lady Eve" "Unfaithfully Yours" "The Palm Beach Story" and "Hail the Conquering Hero."<br /> <br /> 8 x 10 inches. The very fine plates fall into two categories: botanical studies of details of the needles and fruit of the individual trees and landscape studies of examples of individual trees in their natural habitat. Prepared by Wilkins and originally published in installments in the San Francisco call and post beginning April 22 1918. Recollections of his father William A. Richardson and his mother Maria Antonia daughter of Ignacio Martinez. William Antonio. Richardson arrived in San Francisco from England as a first mate aboard the whaler Orion. He remained at Yerba Buena was baptized a Catholic and married the daughter of presidio commandante Ingacio Martinez adopting her given name Maria Antonia as his middle one. Mariano Vallejo appointed him Captain of the Port in 1835 and he built the first habitation there a tent followed by a board house and finally an adobe in 1836. His large Rancho bordered on the bay named for him. These reminiscences by his son give wonderful first person accounts of the life of the Californians and the founding of San Francisco interaction with the native population the depredations of John Fremont the Vigilance Committee business and commerce etc. Does not appear to have been formally published in book format. . no publisher (c 1999) unknown

Samuel Richardson 1688-1761 was almost sixty when his most famous novel Clarissa was first published--four volumes in 1747 and four more in 1748. I it Richardson set out to capture a portrait of a good woman. It was an immediate success not only in England but also in France the Netherlands Germany and Italy where it was translated before Richardson's death. Thoma Jefferson recommended this volume for inclusion in his brother-in-law's libra even though he did not own a set himself. It was also owned by Landon Carter Sabine Hall and John Mercer of Marlborough in eighteenth century Virginia. I was also often advertised for sale in the Williamsburg Virginia Gazette. Although the set is missing its frontispiece plates and the folding plate of music the text collates complete. Volumes I through III professionally respined else Very good. unknown books
