Chez Desenne à Paris 1835 - 1837 21.50 x 27.50 cm relié First edition of the two series published respectively in 1835 and 1836. 36 steel engravings for the first volume and 40 for the second totaling 76 engravings engraved by various English engravers and printed on strong paper under tissue guards. A large title vignette and a frontispiece in the second volume both dated 1836 therefore could not have been part of the first. Green half morocco signed Boutigny. The second volume although using the same tools and the same endpaper and coming from the same workshop is in a noticeably different binding bound two years later in navy blue half shagreen the ensemble being ultimately more aesthetic than if the color were similar. Romantic gilt tool along the spine gilt title. Very fine blue marbled paper. Despite some minimal foxing at the tissue guards and in the margins very fine copy. The selection of works highlights the great sites of Europe including even Mont Saint-Michel and universal representations such as Don Quixote. Each work is accompanied by an introductory text. A beautiful primary source. The first twenty numbered leaves are verbatim excerpts from titles such as Principles of Human Physiology by William Benjamin Carpenter Outlines of Physiology in Its Relations to Man by John Gray McKendrick. The actual diary starts with the entry of Wednesday January 1st 1851 and continues through September 12 1851. It is followed by what appears to be a short section of notes on Gibraltar including a hand-drawn map. The diary then resumes on September 14 1851 until April 1853 interspersed with annotations on the life of painters and more. A glimpse of the daily life of a 19th Century Londoner. TWO WEIRD EROTIC INDIAN ILLUMINATIONS THE LIKES OF WHICH WE HAVE NEVER BEFORE ENCOUNTERED AND ARE UNLIKELY TO ENCOUNTER AGAIN. <br /> <br /> Popular in Roman decorative art the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe the text but there is writing on the verso. <br /> <br /> The second illumination depicts a grotesque she-devil with fangs horns and a long tongue naked save for pearls around her wrists ankles and biceps. Above her waist her speckled skin is light purple and below dark green. The monster clutches to a strange tree on which four priapus grow and with it engages in sexual relations. She reaches toward a basket of several other priapus which are positioned on an upper branch. As with the accompanying illumination in the foreground we find a watery pool and pink flowers and dark green hills studded by surreal trees. The setting is at twilight. <br /> <br /> HIGHLY CURIOUS AND MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED. unknown

Internally nice and clean. 10 126 pp. <br/><br/><em>Rare Electoral capitulation Wahlkapitulation for Charles VI Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of the Austrian Habsburg monarchy from 1711 until his death in 1740. The Wahlkapitulation was a contract or set of conditions that every Holy Roman Emperor-elect had to agree to before being officially crowned. These conditions defined the powers and limitations of the Emperor in relation to the estates of the empire essentially functioning as a constitutional agreement. Charles VI faced succession problems due to the lack of a male heir. To secure his daughter Maria Theresa’s inheritance he issued the “Pragmatic Sanction†of 1713 allowing female succession. Despite his efforts to gain European support his death in 1740 sparked the War of the Austrian Succession. Rivals like Prussia and Bavaria challenged Maria Theresa’s claim leading to conflict and territorial losses. While Maria Theresa ultimately retained power Charles’s plans failed to prevent the crisis leaving her to resolve the instability. Provenance: Valdemar's Castle Denmark </em> unknown
