Fine copy. 8vo 20th century black straight-grain half morocco marbled paper boards brown morocco spine label gilt rules and lettering. Engraved title color frontispiece and two color plates. Without the final leaf of advertisements. An anonymously compiled collection of 20 tales in verse which parody M. G. Lewis' popular Tales of Wonder 1801 and was often incorrectly attributed to him. In his Gothic Bibliography Montagu Summers writes: "The book is gruesome and in its illustrations even disgusting and it seems impossible that Lewis could have had anything to do with it. Some of the ballads are too coarse and grotesque to stand comparison with any work by M. G. Lewis; and they read more like an attempt to ridicule the popularity of the gothic romances for which Lewis was so largely responsible." This poor pastiche of Lewis has one interesting facet: the fifteenth of the twenty tales is "The Black Canon of Elmham or Saint Edmond's Eve an Old English Ballad" which reappeared ten years later almost verbatim as "Saint Edmond's Eve" in Original Poetry by Victor and Cazire the collaborative volume of verse by Percy Bysshe Shelley and his sister Elizabeth published in 1810. Its publisher J. J. Stockdale discovered the plagiarism once the book had been issued and confronted Shelley who pointed the finger at Elizabeth and insisted that all the remaining copies be destroyed. Percy was almost certainly the plagiarist as he was responsible for the lion's share of the contents of the volume but the whole truth is not known. Richard Garnett's writes at some length about the plagiarism in the introduction to his edition of Original Poetry. Binders' ticket of Abrams of Somerset on the rear paste-down. Billed in the preface as a kind of vade mecum for young ladies embarking on the Grand Tour this is a substantial encyclopaedia of Greek mythology written in a continuous narrative which may be read all at once or dipped into rather like Robert Graves' 'Greek Myths' 1955. Two volumes complete for 1825 with anonymous author's founding comments in the first issue No. 1 March 3 1825 through No. XII & XIII August 4 1825. Volume 2: No. XIV Thursday August 18 1825 through No. XIII December 1825. Bound in 3/4 red morocco with lightly rubbed marbled boards and bright marbled endpapers. Bookplate of Scottish Antiquary Arthur David Morice. Remnants of library pocket and slip on endpapers. No other marks. Extensive sepia ink notes which Morice identifies in a pencil note on the back of a piece of ms. laid in the rear dated 1885 as being copied from the interleaved notes of the publisher's own copy publisher and and probable author Lewis Smith. There is another signature which is in the same ink as the notes which signature "Isaac F. Smith "1895" appears on a free front endpaper adjacent to No. I.The transcribed notes are identified by page reference and cover all available spaces on free front and end papers with an additional page laid in upon which Morice has noted their origin. A few other pencil notes by Morice are in the text and a few additional ink notes in the original hand in text and on rear end paper of volume 1. It is not entirely clear if the notes which are in two different ink colors were originally transcribed by Lewis or Isaac Smith the date being quite late for the latter. An UNIQUE COPY. Lyrics to 149 songs; most of them from the 18th century or earlier with several on French & Indian War & Rev. War; one on Bonaparte's Retreat one on Battle of New Orleans the apparent latest acclaims Jackson the new President i.e. 1830; there are none from the blackface-minstrel era which began in the early 1840'snor the popular "I'm Afloat" 1841 which was said to "stem the tide of nierism" ; this compilation apparently was made in the 30's. The publishers changed their name from Turner & Fisher to Fisher & Brother in 1850. Good; fairly solid unmarked; pages are very good good rag paper; very litle foxing mainly around an erased name at top of front free-endpaper;feels just a little loose but holds togeter well;--bottom string broken at rear seems to be intact through most of the text block; corners worn. Bound in original printed paper wrappers with decorative rope-border frame and woodcut vignette of anglers to front wrapper. Wrappers heavily worn soiled and toned throughout with significant tearing loss and fraying to all edges and corners most severely to the right side of the front wrapper. Text block shows the binding thread exposed and partially detached at the gutter with pages loose or near-loose. Moderate age toning throughout; text remains legible. Original issue price “Price Sixpence†printed to foot of front wrapper.<br /> <br /> Shelved in Netdesk Office Case 2 Ephemera Box #6. A charming and uncommon provincial angling manual printed and published at C. Croshaw’s Fishing Tackle Warehouse 36 Pavement York.York circa 1820. Believed to be a provincial reprint of the London edition published by W. Mason in 1813. Contents cover angling technique equipment selection rods lines hooks floats baits flies the haunts and seasons of various fish species and recipes for catching fish by hand. In this book Hayward touches on everything from the 'brief history of cooking' to 'speculations on touching pies and puddings'. He also includes his 'reflections on Hams and Salads' which records how pig farming was becoming 'a fashionable rural pursuit with the fairer sex'. He recounts how 'an acquaintance . actually placed a pig of more than ordinary promise under the exclusive care of a female attendant with directions to give him a warm bath everyday and the result was eminently prosperous.' 13410London: John Lee 440 West Strand 1842. . 15 1pp. sm. 8vo. A very attractive copy in the original cream cloth wrappers gilt-titled with the royal thistle. Fourth edition apparently the earliest one to survive. It is easy to see why this charming "nursery ballad" was read to pieces. Its subject was topical: the christening of Victoria and Albert’s first son Edward on January 25 1842. Evidently the Queen was expected as the Morning Post put it the next morning to order "hostilities to commence against" the splendid christening cake "but Her Majesty appeared unwilling to spoil this remarkable specimen of first-rate confectionary and it therefore remained in statu quo." Hence this poem: In matchless beauty stood the Cake The glory of the day; And now each lady hop’d to take A little bit away. A sugar arm or little leg A relic e’er so small; A feather from the Eagle’s wing - That would be best of all. . . . Between them OCLC and JISC/COPAC record only one copy of this fourth edition at the Lilly Library one of the sixth at Aberdeen and one of the seventh at the Victoria and Albert. View of the mouth of Havana Harbour taken from a shipboard vantage point emphasising the two forts that guarded the mouth: on the left the 'Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro' Morro Castle and on the right 'Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta and marking the boom chain barrier stretched between the two. Havana was attacked by the British towards the end of the Seven Years' War and this would seem an appropriate date for this image. Seeing that Morro Castle presented a formidable challenge should it be attacked from the seaward the British simply landed troops on Cuba who approached from the landward side and commenced siege operations on 11th June gradually battering the walls into ruin. A breach was made on 30th July and the castle taken by storm. With the key to its defences lost Havana was quickly compelled to surrender. unknown

The story traces the hardship of his life as his mother dies and leaves him to fend for himself. The story has a happy ending with the boy reuniting with his loving grandfather.
