Octavo 19 1 pp; disbound from a volume. <p><p>A very rare early "satire on French politics and English colonization" Ferguson. Likening those who fled the tumult of the French Revolution to the English convicts transported to Australia the author petitions them to join the future king of France in the newly established penal colony at Botany Bay: "le vaste continent des Terres Australes leur offre un pays nouveau asyle fait pour eux" "The vast continent of the Southern Lands offers them a new country a refuge made for them". The "count" continues that "c'est la Nation que vous etes dignes d'etentre c'est la Nation que je suis fait pour commander" "this is the nation that you deserve and that I am meant to command" and explains that in the Antipodes the laws are very different and virtue and vice are often upended.</p> <p>The satire evidently found an audience in Revolutionary France: a second edition was published in 1799. It appeared in the very first years of the English colonisation of Australia at a time when France had its own interests in the region and its own problems at home. La Pérouse commanding the Astrolabe and the Boussole arrived at Botany Bay on 24 January 1788 just as Arthur Phillip was moving the English settlement to Port Jackson. They spent six weeks in Australia before moving on.</p> <p>Toby R. Benis uses the pamplet to begin the introduction to his Romantic Diasporas: French Émigrés British Convicts and Jews 2009: "In 1799 a satirical pamphlet aimed at French émigrés and those inside the republic who sympathized with them appeared in England. Claiming to be produced in London the text was framed as an appeal from the Comte d'Artois Louis XVI's youngest brother calling on the 'cowards who fled France and to all those who have been banned from France-princes and valets traitors and bandits princesses and prostitutes' to join him in the British penal colony of Botany Bay: 'a new country made especially for them'. Styling d'Artois the "king of Botany Bay" the writer characterizes Australia as a de Sadian refuge for the worst elements of both Britain and the ancien regime bequeathed by the British government to the emigrant Prince and his circle to rule. A historical curiosity this document nonetheless points to a political and social dimension to exile in the Romantic period.". Romantic Diasporas focuses on how French emigrés Australian convicts and Britain's Jews embodied this state for Georgian society.</p> </p> . unknown

Very Good overall with image area clean and unfaded. <br /> <br /> Photo shows the aftermath of the attempted assassination of Fred Bassett Blair at this time Chairman of the Wisconsin Communist Party. A year earlier Blair had been singled out by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover as the proprietor of one of "eight major communist bookstores operating in the United States." The shooting was carried out by a 17-year-old boy with a handgun inside Mary's Books a used bookshop owned and managed by Blair's wife which indeed carried a small section of Marxist books. Blair was unharmed but a bookseller colleague Ralph Sacks was injured by three bullets. Blair beat the assailant into submission with a toy baseball bat and in this photo the unidentified youth is seen being carried out of the store on a stretcher. unknown

Richard Cumberland 19 February 1731/2 7 May 1811 was an English dramatist and civil servant. In 1771 his hit play The West Indian was first staged. During the American War of Independence he acted as a secret negotiator with Spain in an effort to secure a peace agreement between the two nations. He also edited a short-lived critical journal called The London Review 1809. Pagination: 40 pages. Dowling Vincent 17561825 parliamentary reporter and satirist was born in Queen's Co. Laois; there are no details of his parents. He began his long and successful journalistic career in Dublin in the 1780s where he became a parliamentary reporter memorising speeches and writing up the text for the newspapers. Moving to London temporarily he returned to Dublin in the 1790s. In 1797 he began the Apollo circulating library at 13 Suffolk St. Dublin. A lifelong bibliophile Dowling ran the library for three years latterly at 5 College Green. Vigorously opposed to the legislative union of Great Britain and Ireland he applied his considerable wit and writing talents to attacking the measure. Although against its abolition he nonetheless satirised the Irish house of commons in his Proceedings and Debates of the Parliament of Pimlico. This famous publication ran to twenty-eight issues 17991800 and poked fun at the house of nobs and the foibles of politicians. He also published a periodical The Olio or Anythingarian Miscellany. Disillusioned after the passing of the union he left Ireland in 1801 and returned to London where he became a bookseller and patent medicine vendor at his premises at 30 Lincoln's Inn Fields. He later returned to journalism and worked for The Times moving house to Salisbury Square. His wit and malicious sense of humour were renowned; perhaps his most significant prank occurred after the death 1816 of Patrick Duigenan qv the controversial lawyer and politician. Dowling wrote a detailed account of The melancholy circumstances of the last moments and death of Dr Patrick Duigenan MP which he sent to his godson in Dublin who published it in the Dublin Journal. The article speculated that Duigenan had converted to catholicism on his death-bed an extraordinary volte-face for the extremist defender of protestantism. The story was impossible to disprove although John Giffard qv denied it vehemently. Dowling lived in London for the remainder of his life in affluent retirement at his Kentish Town house. He died there on 29 March 1825. He married and had two sons; both of whom achieved some distinction in England. Vincent George Dowling 17851852 was a prominent journalist the author of Fistiana or The oracle of the ring a history of boxing and was also editor of Bell's Life the sporting newspaper from 1824 until his death. He was present in the house of commons on 11 May 1812 when John Bellingham shot the prime minister Spencer Perceval and was one of the first people to apprehend the assassin. The second son Sir James Dowling 17871844 also pursued a career in journalism becoming a parliamentary reporter in London followed by a successful career as a colonial judge. Source: DIB - Dictionary of Irish Biography Provenance of the Volume: Daniel Dan Callaghan 17861849 was a prominent businessman and Irish politician who served as MP for Cork City from 1830 to 1849 1830-1832 as a member of the Whig Party; 1832-1849 as a member of the Irish Repeal Association. As a member of the Repeal Association Dan Callaghan sought to end the Act of Union 1800 which created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Callaghan along with other Irish MP's like Daniel O' Connell opposed the introduction of the Poor Laws Ireland which established the Victorian workhouses to Ireland. Wikipedia hardcover

From the collection of stage magician Ricky Jay with his bookplate to upper pastedown. Top margin trimmed close with consistent loss to running headers and occasional loss to page numbers with no other text effected. Pages somewhat toned with minor marginal chips but otherwise unmarked. A scarce satire playing both on the rising popularity of get-rich-quick schemes and on the economics of the marriage market the present is the only example to appear in the auction record. OCLC locates only twelve institutional copies. The present is the only example currently in trade.<br /> <br /> A Scheme for a New Lottery warns readers against the dangers posed by get-rich-quick schemes targeting large-scale scams like the recently burst South Sea Bubble sometimes called the world's first Ponzi scheme and the pawn-broking swindle of the so-called Charitable Corporation. These scams were appealing to ordinary people at a time when few were "successful in using wealth from trade to found a landed family" Rapp. Mocking both the conmen and the conned A Scheme satirically proposes "Another Lottery which may prove a general benefit to all concern'd; as there is no better Remedy for a Bite from a Mad Dog than the Liver of the Dog that bit." The proposed lottery filled with abstruse rules and convoluted promises ensures that the cycle continues.<br /> <br /> A Scheme also mocks marriage as a scam in which women could either make a wise match in a rich man or lose it all by marrying down. The lottery provides "Fifty Thousand tickets to be deliver'd to Maids or Widows or any that appear to be such" in the hopes of winning a financially stable husband represented by the tickets drawn. Such a match could be a good one: "A Ware-House Keeper with the Salary of a Hundred Pounds" or "the Governour." It could also by virtue of lottery be a loss: "2 Scotchmen both Pedlars 500 Broken Booksellers" and a range of other ruinous bounders are also listed as prizes. For those who desire an advance attempt the folding game bound in the book invites blindfolded women to stick a pin in the board to claim their prize. The present copy was played gently with pin marks revealing a Blacksmith and a Valet de Chambre among those husbands won<br /> <br /> The popularity of A Scheme resulted in a reissue the same year with a canceled title page as The Ladies Lottery and falsely attributed to Swift.<br /> <br /> ESTC N20921. Original dark blue covers string-bound Japanese style fukuro toji with the pink printed paper title labels. A nice 18th century edition of this work in good impression. Originally published in the 1720's. Though the artist is unnamed several candidates have been mentioned including Ooka Shumboku. 18th century editions of Toba-e books are becoming increasingly uncommon. In a custom clasped chitsu case. The covers are worn but overall a good copy of this book. An excellent example of the somewhat madcap humor of the Toba-e genre. With a bookseller's advertisement at the end which indicates this edition of the book was part of a series of Toba-ehon brought out by the same publisher - SANGOKUSHI OGI NO MATO and TOBA GURUMA. unknown

Expertly rebacked to match original cloth a bit faded along extremities; frontispiece heavily foxed recent bookseller label to front pastedown else Very Good and sound. Errata slip bound in rear. With numerous contemporary holograph corrections throughout most likely made in preparation of the second edition as many are of a semantic rather than purely factual nature for example on p. 12 lines 2 and 3 from the bottom the text reads: ".figures of the poverty-stricken music-professors of Heilbronn haunted their imaginations". A second edition was published by the London firm of C. & H. Senior in 1840 published under the authorship of a John Sayer and revised by "a lady intimately acquainted for a long period with the circumstances of Mr. Eulenstein's life by whom a few additional facts have been supplied." Whether the annotations in this copy are in Sayer's Welsh's Senior's or the lady's hand is unclear. Traces of a contemporary inscription on original pastedown now obscured by new pastedown would potentially reveal the original owner. Short biographical sketch of the popular German musician Charles or Carl/Karl Eulenstein 1802-1890 whose performances gained him celebrity in Great Britain in the late 1820s and whose preferred instrument the Jews' harp Eulenstein also played the guitar is described on p. 1 as both "eminently beautiful" and in a quotation in a footnote more dissonant than "the creaking of hinges or the mewing of cats." Etymologically the Jews' Harp is not in fact a Jewish musical tradition but a corruption of "Jaw's Harp" one of the oldest known musical instruments dating as far back in China as the 4th century B.C. Internally a wide margined and fresh copy with a slight central fold across the title page and small paper repair to the inner margin of same page not affecting text. An exceedingly scarce work in praise of a woman who generated feminist shockwaves in her all too brief life ESTC lists only five known copies. It has never before appeared at auction and the present is the only one on the market.<br /> <br /> An anonymous poetical tribute to the Lady Sophia Fermor whose writing had already placed her among England's intellectual elite and whose two years' marriage to John Certeret second Earl Granville additionally placed her within London's political power center before her early death at age 24. Hailed by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu as having "few equals in beauty or graces" ODNB she was also the thinly veiled author of the revolutionary feminist tract Woman Not Inferior to Man or A Short and Modest Vindication of the Natural Right of the Fair Sext to a Perfect Equality of Power 1739. Released before her marriage with the by-line of "Sophia a Person of Quality" and predating Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Woman by nearly half a century the book was a sensation. Pointing to unequal access to education and unfair treatment under the law as the only reasons for women's cultural inferiority Lady Sophia "exhorted all my sex.to betake themselves to the improvement of their minds and.shew our selves worthy.Let us shew them by what little we do without aid of education the much we might do if they did us justice" Woman Not Inferior. Her marriage was a companionate and loving one both gossiped about and admired. And her loss to puerperal fever in 1745 was felt widely. <br /> <br /> The present work was a tribute to Lady Sophia's irreplaceability. Though on the surface fixated on her external beauty the verses constantly recall women of Ovid and Shakespeare whose uniqueness stemmed from their interior strength and their ability to move others to action. The pastoral emphasis and the name Rosalind immediately evoke Shakespeare's headstrong and outspoken heroine from As You Like It who escaped the injustices of men by dressing and acting as one to protect herself and her best friend. In the poem Rosalind's disappearance to the land of the shades away from her husband Albino's gaze references Eurydice whose life and death inspired Orpheus' powerful songs. And the narrator's pleas for owls and nightingales to quiet themselves harken to stories of female anger and revenge notably Philomela who surived brutality to take her vengeance. The result is something more learned and serious a celebration of a complex woman who could have given more if only she had more time.<br /> <br /> ESTC T45227. Fine. Printed for M. The printing house of Jordi Roca and Gaspar was active in the latter years of the 18th century; its tradition of printing topical works continued at least until the 1830s under the helm of Agustín Roca's widow. Agustín Roca published clandestine leaflets during the Napoleonic invasion and was forced to flee to Tarragona and Mallorca. According to Palau the pamphlets pertaining to both the 1802 and 1827 festivities were issued separately as well as in the collected editions found here. Octavo with two folding maps hand coloured in outline; a very good copy edges uncut in contemporary calf gilt spine neatly repaired. <p><p>An important book and a sometimes neglected precursor to the Australian First Fleet: this was one of the earliest descriptions of Australia published to coincide with the departure from England of the First Fleet. "It is an extremely interesting work and an essential inclusion in all comprehensive collections" Davidson. In discussing the fleet's imminent departure the anonymous compiler lists numbers and equipment as well as the principal officers and there is also material in both preface and text about transportation as well as an "Introductory Discourse" on the subject by William Eden which has often led to the misattribution of the whole book to him.</p> <p>This is an example of the important second edition published the same year as the first and after parliamentary approval of the Botany Bay plans and with a very significant new section: an additional ten prefatory pages appear for the first time in this edition discussing in detail the hopes for the new settlement. The anonymous writer reports that many of the convicts awaiting transportation have embraced the idea with excitement: "strange to tell! there have not been wanting voluntary candidates for banishment to that remote shore.".</p> <p>The "Eden" as it is often called was written "to present at one view a connected description of the whole country of New Holland". The book is clearly aimed at a public eager for information on the new colonial venture and for details of Botany Bay itself which is here described at length. This is the form in which many of the participants in the First Fleet must have absorbed what little information existed about conditions in Australia. The maps show the continent Botany Bay and most interestingly the "passage from England to Botany Bay in New Holland 1787" highlighting the route that the fleet must take.</p> <p>The book is of some importance too for its Cook material: as Cook's bibliographer Holmes points out "the greater part of the book is devoted to Cook's discoveries.". His charting of the east coast of Australia is here put into context in a form anticipating the actual settlement of the new coastline.</p> </p> . John Stockdale unknown

Bush. He made an important political contribution to the state of Nova Scotia before its entry into Confederation of Canada. He was the first international best-selling author of fiction from what is now Canada. In 1856 he emigrated to England where he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament. He was the father of the British civil servant Lord Haliburton and of the anthropologist Robert Grant Haliburton. On 17 December 1796 Thomas Chandler Haliburton was born in Windsor Nova Scotia to William Hersey Otis Haliburton a lawyer judge and political figure and Lucy Chandler Grant. His mother died when he was a small child. When Thomas was seven his father married Susanna Davis the daughter of Michael Francklin who had been Nova Scotia's Lieutenant Governor. He attended University of King's College in Windsor. Later he became a lawyer and opened a practice in Annapolis Royal the former capital of the colony. Haliburton attained distinction as a local businessman and as a judge but his greatest fame came from his published writings. He wrote a number of books on history politics and farm improvement. He first rose to international fame with his Clockmaker serial which first appeared in the Novascotian and was later published as a book throughout the British Empire as popular light reading. The work recounted the humorous adventures of the main character Sam Slick. In 1816 Haliburton married Lousia Nevill daughter of Captain Laurence Neville of the Eighth Light Dragoons. Between 1826 and 1829 Haliburton represented Annapolis County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Haliburton was eager to promote immigration to the colonies of British North America. One of his first written works was an emigrant's guide to Nova Scotia published in 1823 A General Description of Nova Scotia; Illustrated by a New and Correct Map. The community of Haliburton Nova Scotia was named after him. In Ontario Haliburton County is named after Haliburton in recognition of his work as the first chair of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company. In 1884 faculty and students at his alma mater founded a literary society in honour of the College's most celebrated man of letters. The Haliburton Society still active at the University of King's College Halifax is the longest-standing collegial literary society throughout the Commonwealth of Nations and North America. The mention "hurly on the long pond on the ice" which appears in the second volume of The Attaché or Sam Slick in England a work of fiction published in 1844 has been interpreted by some as a reference to an ice-hockey-like game he may have played during his years at King's College. It is the basis of Windsor's disputed claim to being the town that fathered hockey. In 1902 a memorial to Haliburton and his first wife was erected in Christ Church Windsor Nova Scotia by four of their children: Laura Cunard Lord Haliburton and two surviving sisters. Octavo half-title woodcut vignette of a ship setting sail at start of text; neat modern quarter calf. <p><p>First edition scarce: a witty and urbane discussion of everything from the rules of Japanese society to the French Compagnie des Indes. The unknown author's reflections on religion and satirical comments on Europe meant that the work must have been skirting very close to being censored.</p> <p>Presumably published in Paris the imprint is meant to refer to l'Ebahi's stately home the Chateau de Pressure in a salon of which the three main characters the much-travelled Monsieur l'Ebahi "Mister Flabbergasted" the Englishman "Thincker" and the Dutchman "Wurtzheim" are comfortably seated as they swap tales of their marvellous adventures not only in Japan but throughout Asia. The whole story is told with such brio that it could almost pass for actual reportage if it were not for the knowing interjections of the author who says at the outset that the only philosophical lesson worth learning is to admire the teachings of Democritus and be amused by the foibles of mankind.</p> <p>The work does appear quite rare with copies recorded in the British Library and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France but with apparently few others.</p> </p> .
