First published in 1862 Les Misérables became an immediate success and remains Hugos best-known exploration of justice poverty redemption and the moral life of modern society. Illustrated By: De Neuville Bayard Morin Valnay Illustrator Bio: De Neuville Bayard Morin Valnay and other prominent French artists The illustrations in this edition draw on the work of several notable 19th-century French artists including Alphonse de Neuville Émile Bayard Edmond Morin and Jacques Desroches-Valnay. De Neuville was celebrated for his dramatic historical and military scenes; Bayard is especially remembered for his iconic Les Misérables imagery above all his famous Cosette; Morin was a gifted painter-printmaker and journal illustrator; and Desroches-Valnay contributed widely to the illustrated French press of the later 19th century. Synopsis: At the heart of Les Misérables is Jean Valjean the former convict whose attempt to rebuild his life unfolds across a vast panorama of 19th-century France. Around him move Javert Fantine Cosette and Marius as Hugo turns an engrossing narrative into a sweeping meditation on mercy suffering social injustice and political upheaval.
