ril. Joyce era allo stremo delle forze. Lasciata la patria Irlanda, aveva vissuto a Pola, Roma e Trieste, lavorando come insegnante di lingua e impiegato di banca. Quel che aveva pubblicato aveva ricevuto scarsa attenzione; i sacrifici per far uscire "Gente di Dublino" avevano avuto come unico risultato contratti non rispettati, piatti rotti e un'edizione data alle fiamme. Pound, arrivato a Londra nel 1908, nel giro di cinque anni aveva conosciuto i più importanti artisti della capitale inglese e aveva pubblicato cinque libri di poesie. Quando incontrò le prose di Joyce si rese subito conto che quello era l'autore che aveva cercato, il nuovo grande scrittore urbano, il cantore della coscienza moderna. E così divenne l'uomo che cambiò la vita a James Joyce. Nel 1914 iniziò con lui una lunga corrispondenza, che divenne una duratura amicizia. Pound trasmetteva a Joyce le sue reazioni ai dattiloscritti di "Gente di Dublino", "Un ritratto", "Esuli" e "Ulisse" a mano a mano che gli arrivavano, poi li inoltrava alle riviste di cui era redattore, cristallizzando le sue intuizioni in una serie di recensioni e saggi - i primi a proporre i una critica dell'opera joyciana. Poco a poco, Pound creò un pubblico e fece conoscere Joyce. Pound incoraggiò e spronò Joyce costantemente. Le scadenze che gli dava spinsero Joyce a lavorare al massimo dell'intensità e della rapidità alla composizione di Ulisse. Lo stesso Joyce si chiese se i suoi libri sarebbero mai stati completati o finiti davanti al pubblico senza gli sforzi di Pound. Da quel sodalizio nacquero Ulisse e i Cantos, le nuove forme della prosa e della poesia. È difficile indovinare che cosa sarebbe successo alla storia della letteratura senza questo carteggio. "Lettere a James Joyce" raccoglie tutte le lettere di Pound a Joyce e tutti i saggi e articoli di Pound sull'opera di Joyce, qui offerti per la prima volta al lettore italiano nella loro completezza. A questa regola generale fanno eccezione le citazioni dalla Poetica, per le quali ho utilizzato la traduzione inglese di S. H. Butcher che faceva parte della biblioteca di Joyce, e due passaggi di Aristotele proposti nella traduzione inglese, preferita a quella italiana perché, sebbene non strettamente connessi a specifici passaggi di Ulysses o del Portrait, esprimono con maggiore immediatezza il concetto che in quel momento intendo comunicare".
