James Augustine Aloysius Joyce nasce il 2 febbraio 1882 nel sobborgo di Rathgar, Dublino, e questo sarà soltanto il primo degli innumerevoli domicili presso cui si troverà ad alloggiare nel corso della sua vita. Il 1904 è l'anno decisivo per Joyce: in Nassau Street incontra Nora Barnacle che diventerà sua compagna per tutta la vita, e che Joyce immortalerà nelle sue opere. L'8 ottobre 1904 Joyce e Nora partono per l'esilio auto-imposto che li terrà lontani dall'Irlanda per la maggior parte della loro vita. E Joyce, nel suo esilio, non solo imparerà «che cos'è il cuore e ciò che sente», ma realizzerà appieno lo scopo che si era prefissato, ovvero quello di «foggiare nella fucina della mia anima la coscienza increata della mia razza»: con “Ulysses” infatti Joyce forgerà una nuova coscienza per i suoi connazionali, libera dai veleni della religione, del moralismo, del nazionalismo sciovinista. Di questo mondo in catene, Dublino è il punto di osservazione privilegiato. La metropoli ibernica diviene paradigma, archetipo, teatro dell'intera vicenda umana, e il percorrere la città, accompagnati dai diciotto capitoli di “Ulysses”, sarà a un tempo un itinerario alla scoperta di Dublino, del cuore umano e di quella esperienza umana, di cui “Ulysses” è geniale e irripetibile summa. JOYCE (Dublino 1882 - Zurigo 1941) nsegnò inglese a Trieste dal 1905 al 1915, poi di nuovo dopo la guerra, prima di trasferirsi a Parigi nel 1919. 'Ulysses, terminato nel 1918, fu segnalato per primo in Italia da Benco; fu pubblicato a Parigi nel 1922.
