ESTC Citation No. T137624.Detailing the war of 1741 between the Hats of Sweden and Russia which resulted in Sweden losing more land to Russia.Voltaire never willingly published this work; the manuscript of the first book was 'stolen' and published under his name in Amsterdam in 1755. Interestingly he never elected to publish his complete copy of the work instead publishing selected parts of it in his 'Collection Complete des Oeuvres de Voltaire'.Voltaire 1694-1778 was a French writer and historian active during the Enlightenment. He was a proponent of freedom of speech and outspoken against Christianity and the Roman Catholic Church. He was an especially prolific writer with his works spanning poetry novels essays histories and plays across over two thousand books and pamphlets. He was also extremely influential on historiography.Published in 1756 this edition was published by the manuscript thieves with no publisher or place of publication stated.A fascinating work. In a full calf binding. Externally generally smart with a little rubbing to the spine and a chip to the head of the spine. Extremities are a little bumped. Written by Francois-Marie Arouet known by his nom de plume Voltaire a French Enlightenment writer philosopher satirist and historian famous for his wit. Previously held in the library of Captain Sir Henry Duncan KCH a prominent Royal Navy officer of the early nineteenth century operating with great success against French and Italian shipping and shore fortifications in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic Wars. Bound in full tree calf. Externally smart with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with light loss to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Cooke was a major publisher of pocket editions in the eighteenth century and is said to have commissioned over one thousand quality engravings for his pocket editions. With one plate to the Letters of a Peruvian Princess collated and complete. With two plates to Devil on Two Sticks collated and complete. With two plates to The Adventures of Launcelot Greaves collated and complete. With three plates to The History of Pompey the Little collated and complete. With two plates to the first volume of The Tales of Gen and three plates to the second volume collated and complete. The History of Pompey the Little by Francis Coventry is bound with Voltaire's Zadig. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes except Tales of the Gen. William Raynes has also inscribed his name in ink to the recto of the front endpaper of The History of Pompey the Little. It is possible that the set belonged to the socialist politician of the same name who was nominated as Derby's first Labour mayor in 1921. In a contemporary tree calf binding. Externally generally smart. With a scuff in the calf to the second volume of Tales of Gen. The Letters of a Peruvian Princess is missing a quarter of the spine label and the spine label to Pompey the Little is a little chipped. The spines are cracked with a little wear to the head and tail of the spines. The front joint of Launcelot Greaves is beginning to crack and the front hinge is starting to Devil on Two sticks The Adventures of Launcelot Greaves and both volumes of the Tales of the Gen but is firm across all four. The rear hinge is starting but firm to the second volume of Tales of the Gen. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd patch of light foxing. Good C. Cooke hardcover
