425277John Lane The Bodley Head Ltd. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. When he wrote this novel Voltaire gained a reputation throughout Europe as a tragic dramatist an epic poet and a liberal-minded historian. Candide although his wittiest novel deals with the problems of suffering and the existence of evil and in it Voltaire attacks the hopelessness and callousness of the 'all is for the best' philosophy as personified by the tutor Pangloss. The resilience of human nature however is emphasised in the amazing reversals of fortune which Candide and his friends survive. The artistry of Voltaire's story-telling is admirably conveyed in this translation by Richard Aldington. Illustrated by Norman TealbyFirst published in this format in 1928 this being the first reprint in 1929 The content and binding is good. The black cloth boards are rubbed and a little faded Gilded illustration to the front and gilded titles to the spine. The corners are firm the head & tail of the spine slightly crushed. Dust jacket is fagile and has worn edges and some tears see photos John Lane, The Bodley Head Ltd. hardcover
