Illustrated with a coloured frontispiece an extra set of 'en-tetes' in colour and monochrome 'en-tetes' by Adrien Moreau. This volume holds the English translation of the French satire Candide ou l'Optimisme written by Voltaire a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment first published in 1759.The story follows a young man Candide who lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world.Translated with an introduction by Walter Jerrold.
