The editor notes on the advertisement leaf that he recognizes that there might be criticism for the translation and publication of this work "on account of the author's freedom in regard to matters of religion" but feels that the quality of the work exceeds its criticisms and the "True religion is not afraid of bearing the strictest examination." There was strong interest in the French writers of "free thought" and "intellectual liberalism" in America in the eighteenth-early 19th century especially Voltaire and Condillac. The Dictionary "consists largely of attacks on religious dogma; at the same time it shows the author's abhorrence of falsehood obscurity and oppression and is written with simplicity and lucidity coupled with lively malice and sarcasm. It was at once ordered to be burnt at Geneva and was subsequently 1765 condemned by the parlement and by Rome" Harvey & Heseltine p. 209. The work was first published in 1764 in Paris. ESTC identifies two editions printed in London in 1765: the other which appears to be a paginary reprint of this edition was done for Thomas Brown. No priority has been established. Octavo 206 x 124 mm pp. iv 335 1. Wood-engraved device to title page. Contemporary sprinkled calf spine ruled in gilt and with red morocco label edges sprinkled red.
