First Edition of the First Report: "On March 3 1905 Schaudinn discovered the causal organism of syphilis Spirochaeta pallida in serum obtained from a genital lesion by Erich Hoffmann 1868-1959. Schaudinn later renamed the spirochaete Treponemepallidum." Fritz Richard Schaudin 1871-1906 originally wanted to study philology including German philology in Berlin but soon turned to the natural sciences especially zoology. In 1894 he was awarded a doctorate in natural sciences; in the same year he became an assistant at the Berlin Zoological Institute and in 1898 habilitated in zoology at Berlin University where he read mainly on protozoa and general cell theory. Groundbreaking work in these fields in particular the morphology of rhizopods haliozoans and foraminifera soon made him known as an outstanding protist researcher; his important studies on the development of the coccidia Cyclospora karyolytica on malaria parasitic rhizopods and on trypanosomes and spirochaetes were carried out on a voyage to the Arctic Ocean and at the Rovigno Zoological Station. In 1904 Schaudinn was appointed head of the protozoa laboratory at the Imperial Health Office in Berlin. In the spring of 1905 in collaboration with E. Hoffmann he discovered the causative agent of syphilis Spirochaeta pallida which immortalised his name. In 1906 he died at the age of barely 35 having been honoured both as a researcher and as a man. 004228Paris. Faux Lacquer. Very Good Minus. Handsome folder promoting opium as a pharmaceutical! N.d. circa 1900 to 1910. 30 by 23 cm. Tabularly-presented text is on the endpapers with four leaves of heavy blank yellow paper bound in by string. On the two page table of particular interest in our view is the drug called "Pantopon 'Roche'" whose composition is "Opium Total". Other drugs we note contain "barbiturate." The opium-connection might explain the Chinoiserie decoration of the binder. Of course the boards are also very decorative making this binder a prized promotional giveaway which we assume it would have been to the company's customers and other contacts. The Basel-based Hoffmann La Roche was founded in 1896 and soon had offices in Paris. It remains to this day a pharmaceutical giant. Minor surface loss to the black faux lacquer surface along the edges. Ink and pencil marks abounding on the yellow blanks suggesting these were used as blotter paper. Minor loss and looseness to the endpaper at the spine.

unknown books
