Hoffmann 1660-1742 German chemist personal physician of Frederick I in Berlin was professor of medicine in Halle author of treatises on the analysis of mineral waters on magnesia alba and founder of chemical analysis. Hoffmann advocates a rational and systematic medicine with which he takes an intermediate position between Stahl's animistic vitalism and Boerhaave's mechanism. This is the third edition first in 1722. Friedrich Hoffmann s Observationum Physico-Chymicorum Selectorum is highly valued 18th-century work that reflects the intersection of chemistry medicine and natural philosophy during the early Enlightenment period. Hoffmann was instrumental in the development of iatrochemistry the application of chemistry to medicine and was a major advocate of mechanistic physiology. BOOK DETAILS AND CONDITION: Large 4to in possibly contemporary buff heavy cardboard bound with leather cords cont. writing on spine: 1 blank 6 leaves pp 1-288 i.e. 188 since pp 177-188 the index misnumbered as pp 278-288. The most scarce of the Nazi propaganda books in 1933 created by the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei with text by Wilfrid Bade. Profusely illustrated with color images and numerous black-and-white photographs printed on cards and mounted directly onto the pages. Six panel foldout of a Nuremberg rally at rear. Virtually all recorded copies list only 151 pages. Only our copy and the one recorded at Deutsche Nationalbibliothek Leipzig have the extra pages. Also 65 of the photographs have color a process for camera invented by Alga in 1932. Besides the remarkable photographs in the text of the book there is a remarkable 6 panel photograph of the 5th Party Congress held in Nuremberg August 30 - September 3 1933. It was called the "Rally of Victory" Reichsparteitag des Sieges. The term "victory" relates to the Nazi seizure of power and the victory over the Weimar Republic. The Leni Riefenstahl first film Der Sieg des Glaubens was made at this rally. Hitler announced that from then on all Rallies would take place in Nuremberg including the 1934 film Triumph of the Will. Bound in light brown cloth lettered and stamped in gilt spine plain in pictorial wrap around dust jacket in shades of brown depicting marching soldiers with Nazi flags some rubbing or wear to jacket with a couple of creases to rear panel and wear to folds of folding plate at rear. Erich Hoffmann 1868-1959 studierte an der Kaiser Wilhelm-Akademie in Berlin wurde hier 1892 promoviert und trat in den militärärztlichen Dienst ein. Er wandte sich dann der Dermatologie zu und habilitierte sich 1904 in Berlin 1905 Tit.Prof. 1908 a.o.Prof. 1909-1910 war er in Bonn Direktor der Univ.-Hautklinik seit 1917 Ordinarius. Sein Name wurde besonders bekannt daß ihm 1905 mit SCHAUDINN gelang die Spirochaeta pallida als Erreger der Syphilis nachzuweisen. -cf. In 1905 Schaudinn and Hoffmann ended the long search for the organism of syphilis by the discovery of the Spirochaeta palladia. The discovery was the result of the appointment by the German Academy of Science of a committee consisting of Fritz Schaudinn a protozoologist and Erik Hoffmann a dermatologist both young men of established ability in their fields. The story of the search and its final discovery is one of the most interesting stories in microbiology and is beautifully told by Metchnikoff.
