Includes an essay on poetry philosophical specualtions etc. Author editor and soldier Thomas Wentworth Higgisonson's copy with his ownership signature and date in both volumes. Wikipedia: "Thomas Wentworth Higginson 1823 - 1911 was an American Unitarian minister author abolitionist and soldier. He was active in the American Abolitionism movement during the 1840s and 1850s identifying himself with disunion and militant abolitionism. He was a member of the Secret Six who supported John Brown. During the Civil War he served as colonel of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers the first federally authorized black regiment from 1862-1864. Following the war Higginson devoted much of the rest of his life to fighting for the rights of freed slaves women and other disfranchised peoples." Howeverm he is probably best remembered as the editor who worked American poet Emily Dickinson. This work includes a 15pp preface by Mary Sheeley and her Journal of a Six Weeks Tour Letters Descriptive of a Sail Round the Lake of Geneva and of the Glaciers of Chamouni. Also in volume two are a number of letters from Percy Shelley to Mary Shelley. The Percy Shelley material includes an essay on poetry philosophical speculations and the like. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views Shelley did not achieve fame during his lifetime but recognition of his achievements in poetry grew steadily following his death and he became an important influence on subsequent generations of poets including Robert Browning Algernon Charles Swinburne Thomas Hardy and W. B. Yeats. American literary critic Harold Bloom describes him as "a superb craftsman a lyric poet without rival and surely one of the most advanced sceptical intellects ever to write a poem."<br>The Shelleys moved to Pisa in January 1820 ostensibly to consult a doctor who had been recommended to them. There they became friends with the Irish republican Margaret Mason Lady Margaret Mountcashell and her lover George William Tighe. Mrs Mason became the inspiration for Shelley's poem "The Sensitive Plant" and Shelley's discussions with Mason and Tighe influenced his political thought and his critical interest in the population theories of Thomas Malthus.<br><br> Size: Small quarto. Queen Mab achieved the status of a sacred text to the chartist movement and this is one of the early unauthorized reprints issued by the Carlile family. Their career as Queen Mab pirates was begun in 1822 by R. Carlile who reissued the sheets of W. Clark's 1821 edition Clark being in prison for this publication and went on to issue at least half a dozen more editions. With a one page publisher poem at end of Mab text and titled "To Harriet."
