No indication on cover or spine of what the book is. Research online indicates a Nurseryman Sample Book.<br />Contains 89 original stone lithography prints of various vintage fruit trees that would have been for sale at that time.<br />The first few prints show Rochester Litho Co. and the rest of them show Stecher Litho Company.<br />The prints are stunning with incredible detail.<br />This book is very old. The spine at the back is pulling away a tiny bit. Pages are discoloured with age. 1st few prints have been repaired with tape and have a few tears around the edge. There are a few that have stains. Majority of them are in very good condition. Some of the prints are missing but there are 89 left.</p> Stecher Litho Company hardcover

This work contains the two original color lithographs printed by Mourlet Freres under Chagall's supervision. The 36 preparatory designs had as many as twenty colors. With 12 plates including 2 portraits of Rabelais and 10 scenes after the drawings of Devéria. Included also is the fold-out "carte du Chinonois" which according to Brunet is not found in all copies. Volume IX "les songes drolatiques" contains an additional title page a facsimile of the 1565 title and 120 full page woodcut grotesques reproduced by Thompson after those in the original edition Brunet. This edition includes commentaries and notes by Jacob Le Duchat Charles Esmangart Éloi Johanneau Volataire etc. Bound in period cats-paw calf boards with gilt double fillet borders and board edge decoration; expertly re-backed with the spine displaying gilt raised bands gilt labels and panels stamped in blind. Binding shows areas of rubbing and wear to the extremities. Interior pages contain mild to moderate scattered foxing heavier on several pages; an occasional lightly penciled note is present in the margins; a couple minor edge tears are neatly sealed. A chip 1 cm wide x 5mm deep is located on the upper edge of p. 277 Vol. VIII. This edition of Rabelais oeuvres contains notes by many past commentators. With the fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate of John Birney on front paste-downs one bookplate defaced. With the full index in each volume 14pp and 18pp respectively and 8pp list of subscribers and separate single leaf of additional subscribers often missing at end of first volume. The first edition with Grey's extensive notes and splendid plates engraved by Mynde after Hogarth. The frontispiece is engraved by Vertue after Soest. The present copy is almost certainly an Irish pirated version of Bentham's Cambridge edition of the same year. The list of subscribers includes several Irish booksellers who presumably resold the Cambridge edition. A clean copy with particularly sharp impressions of the plates. The extra engraved title is tightly trimmed with no outer margin. Interior pages contain occasional mild marginal spotting but are otherwise generally clean. Lucans epic poem "Pharsalia" written during the reign of Nero concerns the Roman Civil War between Julius Caesar and Pompey. In 48 b.c.e the conflict came to a conclusion with Pompeys defeat on the Thessalian plains of Pharsalus. The poem then extends down to the capture of Egyptian Alexandria. Lucans epic is also noted for containing many elements of the supernatural including turgid scenes of magic and witchcraft. Translated from the Latin into French verse by the French poet and translator Georges de Brébeuf. The first de Brébeuf edition was published by De Sommaville in Paris 1655.
