A very good example of the great romantic binder in his heyday and only five years before his death. At this stage he was still working from Cassette 18 before his relocation to rue de Roule and collaboration with Bauzonnet. In his comparison of the three great craftsmen of the 'triumviri' Ramsden nominates Purgold as 'perhaps the best binder of the three He is also in spirit as in name the least French of the three'. This set includes all half-titles but was bound without the engraved portrait of Johnson often present in first or third volumes. Published in the series 'Oxford English Classics' this edition was supervised by Francis Pearson Walesby 1798-1858 Fellow of Lincoln College and later Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford. The set was originally to comprise nine volumes see titles; the tenth and eleventh volumes containing the 'Debates' were issued as supplements. Volume one contains Murphy's 'Essay' first published separately in 1792. In volume nine 'Journey' retains the dates of August 13 'Lough Ness' and September 20 'Skye' but corrects the error about the Macleods. Walton lived in the parish of St. Dunstan's where Donne was vicar; his life of his friend was written in 1640 as an introduction to a collection of the poet-clergyman's sermons. The other subjects were also personal friends; their biographies were first published in 1651 Wotton 1665 Hooker 1670 Herbert and 1678 Sanderson.
