Contemporary full speckled calf with raised bands and gilt titles and decoration to spine. All edges speckled red. Some minor ink notes to fly-leaf. Top 1.5cm of title page trimmed away probably due to an ownership. Otherwise a crisp clean copy internally. Heavy wear to spine with much gilt rubbed away including all the titles with some loss to head-cap. Upper joint split but holding well. Lighter wear to boards. Good. Uniformly bound in the original attractive marbled boards with green cloth spines stamped in shiny gold. Spines are still a pleasing green -- only very slightly sun-faded see photo -- much less than usual for this set which is often seen with spines sunned to an ugly brown. Each volume has long been protected by a homemade clear plastic dust jacket -- all of which have done their job well resulting in NO fraying and almost NO rubbing. PLEASE NOTE: Vertical white lines in the photos are light reflected from the clear plastic dust jackets NOTon the books themselves. There are faint shadows at the corners of the front free endpapers from tape adhesive offset minor -- see photo. Otherwise all pages are fresh crisp and unmarked -- uncut and unopened apparently never read. NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. Each volume measures 6.75" wide by 10.25" tall. This is number 457 of 750 standard sets another 50 having been being printed on Van Gelder paper. Volumes I-II were published in 1931; Volumes III-VI in 1932. cxxxvi 460pp; iv 532pp; iv 595pp; iv 603pp; iv 545pp; iv 594pp. Edited and with notes by Montague Summers. Top gilt edges are dusty. Otherwise some mild age-staining and spotting throughout and in very good condition overall. This was the next to the last of Dryden's plays to be produced. Owing to Dryden's illness the fifth act of the play was completed by Thomas Southerne. The life of Cleomenes was translated from Plutarch by Thomas Creech. It is believed that the revival of some of Shakespeare's Roman plays about this time turned the attention of both playwrights and public to classical themes. In his Dedication Dryden attributes the lifting of the ban to Rochester the dedicatee who had represented the drama to the Queen as 'wholly innocent of those Crimes which were laid unjustly to its Charge'.
