Armorial bookplate to inside front board of all vols; as it has Fortescue motto and earl's coronet it is almost certainly that of James Fortescue created Earl Fortescue in 1789. Somewhat tight margins at title page gutters; no issue elsewhere. A little foxing mostly to prelims. Loop of cord from rebacking left free in vol. IV between pp. 368-69. Vignette chapter headpieces. An early collected edition first published in 1760 in the midst of Dryden's career as an author who succeeded in 'reforming the syntax of our prose at the same time as he was perfecting the rhyming couplet as the dominant form for English verse fashioning it into an instrument for argument giving it a rhythmical variety and tonal range which no one has matched' ODNB. One of 750 standard limited sets numbered 51 to 800 this copy being number 765. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with marbled paper covered boards.A delightful collection of the dramatic works of John Dryden. He was appointed England's first Poet Laureate and is regarded as hugely influential during the Stuart Restoration with the period even being referred to as the 'Age of Dryden' in literary circles. Includes 'Don Sebastian' 'Amphitryon' 'Secret Love' 'The Spanish Fryar' 'The Duke of Guise' 'All for Love' and 'The Kind Keeper' among many other works. Edited by author clergyman and scholar Montague Summers. From Nonesuch Press a private press founded in 1922 by Francis Meynell his second wife Vera Mendel and their mutual friend David Garnett. The press was at its peak in the 1920s and 1930s but continued operating through the mid-1960s. Nonesuch was unusual among private presses in that it used an Albion press to design their books but had them printed by commercial printers. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally smart with rubbing and bumping to the extremities and fading to the spines.
