Sous son véritable nom de Julien Viaud, comme reporter et pour le plaisir, il avait pourtant composé, au fil de ses campagnes de jeune officier de marine, une remarquable ¿uvre graphique, ethnographique aussi. La voici pour la première fois réunie. Plus de cinq cents dessins, accompagnés des gravures qui en furent tirées et de textes de l¿écrivain, forment un singulier carnet de voyages autour du monde, vers les lointains de cet artiste polymorphe et raffiné : Terre de Feu, île de Pâques, Tahiti, Brésil, Amérique du Nord, Sénégal, Maghreb, Adriatique, Indochine, Japon, mais aussi Bretagne et Saintonge natale, sans oublier son cher « Stamboul ». Ils ont notamment entrepris de conserve la publication au long cours du Journal de Loti (t. 1, 2006 ; t. 2, 2008, Paris, Les Indes savantes). Alain Quella-Villéger, natif de Rochefort, comme Pierre Loti, agrégé d¿histoire et docteur ès-lettres en histoire contemporaine, est le biographe de Pierre Loti, de Claude Farrère et de René Caillié. Il est, en outre, co-auteur d¿une dizaine d¿anthologies aux éditions Omnibus (dont Istanbul, Rêves de Bosphore, 2001), directeur et fondateur de la revue Les Carnets de l¿exotisme (1990-2006), à la suite de la Revue Pierre Loti (1980-1988), et auteur de plusieurs autres ouvrages, dont deux romans. Aux éditions Bleu autour, il a préfacé la réédition de Suprêmes visions d¿Orient (2006, 2010), le dernier ouvrage de Pierre Loti. Bruno Vercier, docteur ès-lettres et universitaire, spécialiste de l¿autobiographie et du journal intime, est co-auteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur la littérature française contemporaine (aux éditions Bordas). Il a signé l¿appareil critique de nombreuses rééditions de textes de Pierre Loti, ainsi que de Raymond Radiguet et Charles-Louis Philippe (aux éditions Flammarion et Gallimard). Il préside l¿Association pour laMaison de Pierre Loti. Enis Batur, qui vit à Istanbul et séjourne régulièrement à Paris, est l¿une des figures centrales de la littérature turque depuis vingt-cinq ans. Romancier, essayiste et poète, il est l¿auteur d¿une centaine d¿ouvrages, souvent traduits dans de nombreuses langues étrangères. Les Turqueries ou autrement dit le thème turc a joué un grand rôle dans la littérature et les arts (la peinture, la musique, le ballet, les objets décoratifs etc...) en France. Si les croisades ont mis en contact l'Orient musulman et l'Occident chrétien, la prise de Constantinople et la montée en puissance de l'Empire ottoman ont fait des Turcs ottomans le principal représentant de l'Orient en Occident. Pour les écrivains français le thème turc représentait l'altérité par excellence. Peu importait la véracité de l'image, la fiction française s'était emparée du Turc. Georges de Scudéry relate l'histoire du célèbre Ibrahim, vizir du sultan Soliman le magnifique dans Ibrahim ou l'illustre Bassa. Le grand Racine, si respectueux des règles classiques, ose contourner la tradition des sujets antiques en prétendant que "l'éloignement des pays répare en quelque sorte la trop grande proximité des temps" et crée sa tragédie intitulée Bajazet d'après le prince ottoman du même nom. A ne pas confondre avec le héros de l'opéra de Vivaldi, un autre Bajazet, le sultan vaincu par Tamerlan. Bien avant Molière, Rotrou fait parler ses personnages en turc dans sa pièce intitulée La Sour. Molière reprendra ce procédé avec le succès que l'on connaît dans Le Bourgeois gentilhomme qui est la turquerie par excellence du 17ème siècle et qui combine non seulement des personnages turcs mais aussi la musique de Lully directement inspirée des sonorités turques, sans parler des costumes et des pas de danse à la turque. Ainsi, la mode est lancée par Molière pour se moquer des Turcs. D'autre part, grâce à la Bibliothèque orientale d'Herbelot l'érudition passe également par les Turqueries. Au 18ème siècle le thème turc se mêle de critique et de philosophie. Voltaire rapporte les paroles du vieux Turc d'Istanbul, il faut cultiver son jardin, sans cesser de condamner le fanatisme musulman. Les Turqueries se mêlent également de littérature licencieuse voire érotique. Au 19ème siècle les Turqueries se fondent dans l'Orientalisme et prennent des accents politiques. Peut-on dire que de nos jours la tradition des Turqueries continue, après avoir subi certes une certaine transformation ? Peut-on considérer La Pasión turca d'Antonio Gala ou Le Turquetto de Metin Arditi comme des turqueries contemporaines ?

The exhibition highlights the orientalist trend in Polish painting, as well as drawings and graphic arts. The works in the exhibition cover a wide period from the 17th to the early 19th centuries. Among others, the exhibition includes drawings by Christian Kamsetzer of his Turkish travels, as well as oriental scenes by artists like Zmurko and Brandt. The artworks exemplify topics related to the Ottoman world, and to a lesser extent, the Near East and North African regions. One section of the exhibition is dedicated to Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz. Works by other artists who had visited Turkey, among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, and Jacek Malczewski, are also included. Selected from the collections of Polish institutions ranging from the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznan, and Wroclaw, the University Library in Warsaw, to Lazienki Palace Museum, the exhibition brings together approximately 190 works. The apogee of Orientalism, which refers to a cultural current in Europe centred on an interest in the cultures of the East manifesting itself in art, architecture, music, literature, and the theatre, arrived in the 19th century, when a distinct Orientalist current sprang forth from academic painting, inspired first and foremost by the cultures of the Islamic countries of the Middle East and North Africa, as well as of Moorish Spain. In the specific case of Poland, interest in the Orient goes back to medieval times; a natural result of her geographic location, which rendered Poland particularly susceptible to influences from the East. To a large extent, this period in Polish history was defined by successive wars with the Ottomans, and it left an indelible trace in culture. A variety of equestrian types, generic skirmishes and great historic battles were depicted many times by various skilled artists, as well as Oriental characters, landscapes, and genre scenes -first and foremost of the harem. The latter subject matter, popular among audiences, was often taken up by painters who had never been to the East themselves. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artists among them Jan Matejko, Waclaw Pawliszak, Jan Ciaglinski, Jacek Malczewski, and especially Stanislaw Chlebowski, the court artist of Sultan Abdülaziz, are included, and also sheds light on the artistic influences of Poland's cultural interaction with the East, different from the Western Orientalist approach, through history, diplomacy, battles and travellers.

Youssouf Bey: The Charged Portraits of Fin-de-Siécle Pera is a two-volume special publication (Vehbi Koc Foundation, Istanbul, 2016) that accompanied ANAMED's exhibition "The Characters of Yusuf Franko: An Ottoman Bureaucrat's Caricatures"(26 January - 01 June 2017). The edited book of articles from this special edition has been recently republished by ANAMED and, thus, is available to a larger audience. Yusuf Franko Kusa Bey (1856-1933), a high-ranking bureaucrat in fin-de-siècle Ottoman imperial administration, was also a talented caricaturist. Because of his duties in the Ottoman Foreign Ministry, and spending most of his life in Istanbul, he was both a member and an observer of high-society social circles in Pera [Beyoglu]. Ambassadors, ministers, diplomats, famous opera singers, painters, Pashas and Efendis, Madames and Monsieurs, were part of this social milieu, and most of them became eternally recorded through the 'types and charges' in Yusuf Franko's caricature album. Including images of himself, he charged his subject materials, the people in his social network, with their particular qualities and transformed their portraits into witty caricatures that reflected contemporary scenes of social life and political debates in Pera. While the articles in this book analyze the majority of Yusuf Bey's caricatures from diverse perspectives (his family history and biography, the history of contemporary European caricature art and politics, and the social and spatial context in which he drew his caricatures), the appendix gives brief information about each caricature plate in the original album. These extraordinary caricatures are published for the first time in their entirety since they were discovered in an antique rug dealer's shop in Istanbul in 1957.

Halil Inalcik, Bilkent University. This book provides a fresh interpretation of the historical relations between these two important powers and also Turkey-Europe relations. In the foreword, Halil INALCIK, a prominent global historian, underlines the joint Ottoman-Dutch role in shaping the European and the World history. In the following chapter, Levent KIRVAL focuses on the history of the economic and political relations between Turkey and the European powers, and he particularly focuses on the economic and cultural interactions between the Turks and the Europeans. Subsequently, Bülent ARI, first gives brief information about the phases of Dutch revolt which started in 1567 against the Spanish oppression and then evaluates the political atmosphere of the period and the conflicts between the European states.
