Marbled endpages have previous owner's sticker to top edge of front pastedown and light sunning to edges. Text block has light sunning to fore edge and top edge light scuffing to lower edge and light soiling to lower edge of volume two. All edges marbled. Containing all his best-known poetry including The Faerie Queen April and Astrophel. Spenser's masterpiece is an extensive poem The Faerie Queene. The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590 and a second set of three books were published in 1596. This extended epic poem deals with the adventures of knights dragons ladies in distress etc. yet it is also an extended allegory about the moral life and what makes for a life of virtue. With engraved frontispiece of Spenser to Volume I. Spenser was called a Poet's Poet and was admired by William Wordsworth John Keats Lord Byron and Alfred Lord Tennyson among others. The language of his poetry is purposely archaic reminiscent of earlier works such as The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer and Il Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca whom Spenser greatly admired. Spenser's Epithalamion is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride Elizabeth Boyle. The poem consists of 365 long lines corresponding to the days of the year; 68 short lines representing the sum of the 52 weeks 12 months and 4 seasons of the annual cycle; and 24 stanzas corresponding to the diurnal and sidereal hours. Complete in eight volumes. Rebound in half-morocco bindings with marbled boards and original spine labels. Externally smart with some minor wear to the spines and some sunfading to the boards. The cover is in fair condition with slight scuffing to the corners and the top and bottom of the backstrip and some additional signs of wear on the remainder of the cover. The binding is split at the front of the pageblock but remains firm throughout the remainder. The pageblock is uncut and the leaves are slightly browned with age towards the edges. The text is in good condition with no annotations foxing or other significant markings.This book has hardback covers. 18657722Kerry Powys: unpublished circa 1865. Farewell address expressing the heartfelt thanks of the people of Kerry near Newtown Montgomeryshire/Powys and surrounding villages to Rev. E. S. Tiddeman for his endeavours in their parish likely on the occasion of his removal circa 1865 to the parish of Childerditch in Essex. The Subscribers wish to record specially their gratitude to Tiddeman for pioneering adult education in the area teaching "gratuitously reading writing and arithmetic to the working men of the neighbourhood" and his faithful exercise of his ministry: "It has not been unnoticed by us that during your short sojourn among us you have in the lonely hours of night sat by the bedside watching over the pillow of the dying." The villagers further beg Tiddeman to accept their gift of a silver pocket communion service as a humble token of their esteem and respect. A single paper leaf 35x53 cm penned in a cursive hand all text visible; paper foxed and stained missing 2x5 cm top left corner and parts of top edge; tears to top right corner patched front and rear with sticky labels. Four 'stubs' at bottom possibly remains of attachments for seals. Several horizontal creases as though once presented as a scroll. Tiddeman 1831-1898 was sometime second-master at Llanrwst Grammar School. His wife Harriet Spooner's family were instrumental in the construction and operation of the Ffestiniog Railway; and one of their sons was draughtsman with the LNER. Tiddeman's obituary stated the family tradition he was a direct descendant of the poet Edmund Spenser. This edition was intended as a stylistic companion to Dent's Le Morte d'Arthur 1894-95 illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley and as a competitor to the George Allen edition of The Faerie Queene illustrated by Walter Crane and published the same year. Fairfax-Muckley 1862-1926 was an influential leader of the arts and crafts Birmingham School having studied painting and drawing at the Birmingham School of Art in the early 1880s. A 1901 profile by the Society of Designers declares that he "has always had a strong bent towards the straightforward methods of the early painters. as witness the beautiful designs for his well-known edition of the 'Faerie Queene' which fully express his natural admiration of the early Italian work" p. 171. Dent commissioned Beardsley and Fairfax-Muckley to illustrate his deluxe arts and crafts publications in an effort to emulate the success of the Kelmscott Press. An additional limitation of 100 copies on handmade paper was also issued. 2 vols quarto. First edition of this collection celebrating the revival of the sonnet tracing its history from Spenser to Shakespeare and Milton through contemporaries Charlotte Smith Mary Robinson and a young Leigh Hunt. The English sonnet fell out of fashion in the early 18th century only to come roaring back to popularity with the publication of Charlotte Smith's ELEGIAC SONNETS in 1784. But this volume provides a much wider and more nuanced picture of the development of the English sonnet including Smith's predecessor Thomas Edwards and her contemporaries Anna Seward whom Henderson especially likes William Lisle Bowles Helen Maria Williams and Mary Robinson. Henderson's introduction contextualizes the wide range of sonnets included from the amatory Robinson to the elegiac Smith. This compendium established the state of playing field for the form in the Romantic era and it was a favorite form of Coleridge Keats Shelley and Wordsworth. Coleridge wrote a pamphlet celebrating the form in 1796 and the first poem Wordsworth published was "Sonnet on Seeing Miss Helen Maria Williams Weep" in 1787 an homage to Williams and Charlotte Smith both. A notable Romantic-era collection unusual in so widely acknowledging the debts of English poetry to women writers. Contemporary half roan marbled paper boards gilt-ruled and -lettered spine. First Edition. St. John who as a young man was fascinated with Borneo and the adventures of Sir James Brooke rajah of Sarawak and took up the study of the Malay language was introduced to Brooke on his visit to England in 1847 and accompanied him as private secretary when Brooke was appointed British commissioner and governor of Labuan. Thenceforth St. John and Brooke were closely associated. St. John was with Brooke during his final operations in 1849 against Malay pirates and he accompanied Brooke to Brunei the Sulu archipelago and to Siam in 1850. Although St. John deemed some of his chief's dealings with the natives high-handed and ill-advised he in a letter to Gladstone defended Brooke against attack in the House of Commons. While the official inquiry into Brooke's conduct which the home government appointed was in progress at Singapore St. John acted temporarily as commissioner for Brooke 1851-5 and visited the north-western coast of Borneo and the north-eastern shore ascending the principal rivers. Appointed in 1856 British consul-general at Brunei St. John explored the country round the capital and penetrated farther into the interior than any previous traveller. He published his full and accurate journals supplemented by other visitors' testimonies in these well-written and beautifully illustrated volumes entitled Life in the Forests of the Far East 1862. DNB Included are chapters on the Sea and Land Dayaks and their social life the Samarahan River and the Caves of Sirih St. John's ascents of the Mountain of Kina Balu explorations in the interior to the south and south-east of the capital expedition up the Limbang River visits to the Sulu Islands Borneo proper Sarawak the Chinese in Borneo the Chinese insurrection and Roman catholic and protestant missions.
