Entrare in quel sogno è immediato, uscirne difficile, se non attraversando un reticolo di storie, di rapporti e di risonanze che coinvolgono non solo Baudelaire ma ciò che lo circonda. Dove spiccano due pittori di cui Baudelaire scrisse con stupefacente acutezza: Ingres e Delacroix; e due altri che solo attraverso Baudelaire possono svelarsi: Degas e Manet. Secondo Sainte-Beuve, perfido e illuminato, Baudelaire si era costruito un "chiosco bizzarro, assai ornato, assai tormentato, civettuolo e misterioso", che chiamò "la Folie Baudelaire" (folies era il nome settecentesco di certi padiglioni dedicati all'ozio e al piacere), situandolo sulla "punta estrema del Kamcatka romantico". Ma in quel luogo desolato, in una terra ritenuta dai più inabitabile, non sarebbero mancati i visitatori. Anche i più opposti, da Rimbaud a Proust. Anzi, sarebbe diventato il crocevia inevitabile per ciò che apparve da allora sotto il nome di letteratura. Qui si racconta la storia, discontinua e frastagliata, di come "la Folie Baudelaire" venne a formarsi e di come altri si avventurassero a esplorare quelle regioni. Un storia fatta di storie che tendono a intrecciarsi, e per alcuni decenni ebbero come sfondo le stesse strade di Parigi.
