ill., ril. In ossequio al modello culturale legato al mito di Roma, Petrarca praticò quasi tutti i generi: dalla poesia, al trattato morale, all'epistolografia, alla storiografia. Ed è proprio a quest'ultimo filone che appartengono i testi raccolti in questo "Millennio": il "De viris illustribus" e il "De gestis Cesaris". Con il "De viris", Petrarca riprende apparentemente le forme della storia universale medievale, iniziando la trattazione da Adamo e dai personaggi biblici. Ma nello stesso tempo forza questa tradizione focalizzando i suoi personaggi illustri, per quantità di voci e loro dimensioni, nell'ambito della storia di Roma. Con questa "mossa" dà il via alla storiografia umanistica. Al "De viris" (in cui grande rilievo ha la vita di Scipione e che documenta l'appassionato repubblicanesimo del giovane poeta) viene abbinata l'opera più matura del Petrarca storico, il "De gestis Cesaris", interamente centrata sulla vita e le imprese di Giulio Cesare; in essa il Petrarca si muove verso un approfondimento storico-psicologico che assolve Cesare dall'accusa di aver provocato, per ambizione, le guerre civili, e fa affiorare i segni di una sua "conversione" in favore della monarchia imperiale.
