22074On letterhead of the Century Club 7 West Fortythird Street New York. 13 April 1928. The name of the recipient is not clear: it would appear to read 'Wriggles' and the letter suggests that this is a pet name for Melchers' close friend Henriette Lewis-Hind who wrote the foreword to 'Gari Melchers Painter' published that same year in New York by W. E. Rudge. An excellent letter full of content beginning: 'My dear Wriggles. We only returned from the West Indies a week or two ago – had a fine time'. He continues: 'I have been busy here – but leave today for home to stay there a week or two – Corinne his wife the artist Corinne Lawton Mackall Melchers 1880-1955 sent me your letter – and it seems as tho a letter by you written some time ago never reached me'. He announces that the 'G. M. exhibition at the Anderson Galleries is to open Jan first 1929 – and last for four weeks'. He has seen the president of the Anderson Galleries Mitchell Kennerly 1878-1950 several time in recent weeks 'and he has been very nice and in earnest about the whole project everything is arranged and O.K. and we both agree that it must be done just as well as is humanly possible. Yesterday we had a meeting or conference in my studio at which Mr Rudge William Edwin Rudge 1876-1931 the publisher of the very finest books made was present and he is willing to go into the thing and turn out a fine book. You are to write the text.' Rudge 'suggests fifty black and white reproductions a few color prints – and some drawings or sketches interwoven'. For his part Melchers is 'most eager to see some facsimilae sic of watercolor & sketches – and drawings which make it more of an art book – than a picture book – but it seems that all this kind of work I suggest is most costly – and may much to my regret have to be cut down to a minimum – sorry!' Kennerly is 'leaving for Europe in a week or two – and you will see him in London – and hear all this first hand – and know exactly what the exact situation is'. Turning to another matter he writes that he is enclosing a draft for £500 'which you said at the time was what I could have the Shannon portrait for – and I want to stop it being hawked about.' The reference is to the portrait of Melchers by James Jebusa Shannon 1862-1923 now at the Gari Melchers Estate and Memorial Gallery Belmont. If she can sell the portrait to a museum before the following July 'and get more money for it – you can do so – and return to me the money I have paid for the picture'. He also thinks he might show the portrait at his January exhibition. 'All this in haste – as I am about to leave for Virginia.' In a postscript regarding the writing of the text for the Rudge book he writes: 'You may be tempted to limit my life to Egmond – so be on guard and remember that my activities cover many other periods and places'. I think I've reached the point that I'm convinced enough of the reality of the ET presence and I'm not going to deny it and shy away from it. It is time to open this up to the public." - Edgar Mitchell

Interesting eight book archive from the personal collection of Astronaut and Moonwalker Edgar Mitchell. All books on the subject of psychic exploration which Mitchell was famously involved in. Late in 1973 and early 1974 Mitchell co-founded the Institute for Noetic Science. The Institute conducts research on topics such as spontaneous remission meditation consciousness alternative healing practices consciousness-based healthcare spirituality human potential psychic abilities psychokinesis and survival of consciousness after bodily death. Edgar Mitchell was widely recognized for his public stance on the existence of UFO's and the powers of the mind. He believed that the bridging of science and the power of the human mind represented the key to our discovering the worlds outside our own. The subject of Noetic Science has flourished of late thanks to it's use in Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" which was published in 2009. No longer considered "fringe" science by most Mitchell was one of the early believers in the powers of meditation and collective thought.

Archive Includes:
1 Gill Joseph - The Great Pyramid Speaks to You Philosophical Library 1984 - SIGNED TO EDGAR MITCHELL BY AUTHOR
2 Gignous Jane Hughes - Some Folk Say: Stories of Life Death and Beyond FoulktTale Publishing 1998 - SIGNED TO EDGAR MITCHELL BY AUTHOR
3 Friedman Norman - Bridging Science and Spirtit Living Lake Books 1994 Revised Edition - SIGNED TO EDGAR MITCHELL BY AUTHOR
4 Mayur Ed. 18485000630London: Longman Brown Green and Longmans 1848. Octavo frontispiece 11 lithograph plates and seven maps four folding; a fine copy unusually clean bound without the advertisements in later half blue morocco gilt top edges gilt.

An elegantly bound copy of the first edition.

In late 1845 with Edmund Kennedy as his second-in-command Mitchell set out from Sydney in search of an overland route to the Port Essington settlement. Although he did not find the hoped-for route over the next year he explored a vast area of unknown country in tropical Queensland returning to Sydney in December 1846. As with his earlier expeditions Mitchell showed contempt for official orders preferring instead to follow his instincts. In this instance he seemed more interested in discovering the fabled Kindur River one of his more enduring but erroneous beliefs. To justify his decision he here represented his discovery of the Victoria River which was in fact the Barcoo as the legendary great north-flowing source. Although Mitchell did not succeed in finding a northward route and - if anything - further confused the riddle of the inland rivers upon his return the expedition charted a vast area of previously unknown country without significant mishap or the loss of a single man.

The fine tinted lithograph views in the books are all after Mitchell's own drawings. His work as a topographical artist has gained increasing respect in recent years and can be appreciated in the plates prepared for this book. It is characterised by a fine attention to detail and an accomplished use of tone and shading.

. Provenance: G.R. Nicolaus with pictorial bookoplate. 1937122606Atlanta 1937. unbound. 1 page 11 x 7.25 inches Atlanta June 29 1937. Rare letter signed "Margaret Mitchell Marsh" declining an invitation to a party because it conflicts with her wedding anniversary in full: "Dear Miss Hall: Sue Myrick forwarded to me your invitation and John and I appreciate it so very much. I know the party will be lots of fun and I only wish we could come but Sunday is our wedding anniversary and we have already made plans to spend it with friends. I admit that the temptation to break this engagement is strong because I liked Milledgeville so much when I was there at the Press meeting. And also I would love to attend your party as Prissy. That is the only role my size would warrant. The costume would be cheap too --just a croker sack and ten cents' worth of shoe polish. We do appreciate your invitation so much and I shall look forward to Sue's description of the party." Two horizontal folds and slight foxing; very good condition.

unknown books
