Otherwise a very good clean copy.

First Russian edition. First book by Steinbeck in Russian.

Although the book was banned shortly in Ireland and few American towns in schools and libraries it was for obvious reasons
never banned in Soviet Union. It was important for Soviet authorities to monitor what was published in the West. Unfortunately for them it was a hard task to find anything suitable for their purposes - a high standard bright foreign fiction with correct ideology. That is why Grapes of Wrath was a definite bombshell not only in America but even more so in Soviet Union. It made Steinbeck famous in a day. Starting in August of 1939 such newspapers as Pradva Ogonyok Literary Newspaper printed short fragments from Grapes of Wrath. Soviet newspapers made it famous even before it was fully published. For example Izvestiya from November 17th 1939 with an article titled "Grapes of Wrath - banned in USA" about a campaign against the book across America: ".because it reflects the hard
situation and conditions in which farmers live in California". Soviet anticapitalist interpretation was obvious and announced instantly in many reviews e.g. in one of these reviews was said the author "leads us to a logical way out - a revolution freeing lower classes from exploitation". Soviet periodicals clearly showed ideological and political bias typical for the Soviet assessment and interpretation of the novel as an example of proletarian and anti-capitalist American literature. After the full translation was published in 1940 Steinbeck received many letters from Soviet editors and officials thanking him for writing this novel and telling him about thousands of new fans.

In 1948 USSR bought rights for Grapes of Wrath film 1940 to demonstrate the Soviet viewer all "ulcers and vices" of American capitalism but in just a few days of the showing the film was cancelled because people noticed that a broke farmer was able to buy a used truck.

In 1963 Steinbeck came to Russia for the second time his first visit he described in his book A Russian Journal published in 1948. At one of the unofficial meetings at Russian poet Evtushenko's apartment he met a Siberian driver Evtushenko's uncle Andrey with whom he spent almost the entire evening in a conversation. Apparently the driver knew Grapes of Wrath very well which maid Steinbeck ecstatic: "You made my day Andrew! I would never thought truck drivers from Siberia would read my books!"

WorldCat locates four copies. Gosizdat unknown

One of 260 copies folio size 60 pp. signed by Wallace Stegner and Karin Wikstrom. John Steinbeck 1902-1968 considered "a giant of American letters" was best known for his portrayals of families in California often exploring themes of alienation and injustice through "everyman" characters n. b. info from Wikipedia. "Flight" is a short story originally published in the collection "The Long Valley" on the subject of manhood as the protagonist Pepe strives to fill his father's place. While in town he kills a man and must fllee and his subsequent trials reveal that Pepe is not only "trying to live up to the foolish and romantic ideal of manhood common to his kind but is one of the incarnations of Everyman pursuing the ideals that foolish or not. . .in the end give him stature and dignity" per the afterword.

Wallace Stegner 1909-1993 provides an afterword for this edition. Stegner was often called "The Dean of Western Writers"; he was a member of the faculty at Stanford University and founded its creative writing program. The Stegner Fellowship program at Stanford was named in his honour and he is a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and the U.S. National Book Award in 1977. In the afterword Stegner analyses the themes and characters in the story in the context of Steinbeck's other work as well as the literary movement at the time.

Included in this publication by The Yolla Bolly Press are woodcuts by Swedish artist Karin Wikstrom b. 1959 who has contributed illustrations for several other Press editions including "The Inland Whale" by Theodora Kroeber and "Zapata" by John Steinbeck. Here her prints evoke a pathos for the tragic fate of the characters in their pursuit of dreams and dignity.

___DESCRIPTION: Full natural linen with wrap-around tan illustration of desert landscape white paper spine label with brown lettering fore-edge uncut tan endpapers title page with orange woodcut by Karin Wikstrom six colour woodcuts by Wikstrom tipped in throughout orange woodcuts by Wikstrom throughout; Goudy Modern type folio size 12 1/4" by 10 1.4" pagination: i-vi 1-39 40-42 43-52 53 1 colophon this no. 161 of 250 numbered copies total edition of 260 signed by Wallace Stegner and Karin Wikstrom on the colophon. 06569New York: The Viking Press 1947. A Powerful Documentary Collaboration
Steinbeck's Stark Vision of Rural Mexico - First Edition

STEINBECK John. The Forgotten Village. With 136 photographs from the film of the same name by Rosa Harvan Kline and Alexander Hackenschmied. New York: The Viking Press 1941.

First edition first issue. Quarto 10 x 6 7/8 inches; 254 x 175 mm. 1-8 9-143 1 blank pp. Illustrated throughout with 136 photographic reproductions.

Publisher's tan buckram front cover pictorially decorated in green spine lettered in green top edge stained green. A near fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket.

A striking and unusual work by John Steinbeck conceived in conjunction with the documentary film of the same name. The Forgotten Village departs from Steinbeck's more familiar fictional narratives presenting instead a quasi-anthropological account of life in a remote Mexican village where traditional beliefs and modern medicine collide with tragic consequences.

The text - part narrative part social document - follows the story of a young boy Juan Diego whose village is ravaged by disease. Steinbeck's restrained almost reportorial prose heightens the emotional impact underscoring themes of cultural conflict superstition and the limits of intervention. The work reflects Steinbeck's deep and abiding interest in marginalized communities a concern that runs throughout his major novels.

The volume is richly illustrated with 136 photographs by Rosa Harvan Kline and Alexander Hackensmid later known as Alexander Hammid whose cinematic eye lends the book a powerful visual immediacy. The photographs are not merely illustrative but integral to the narrative reinforcing the documentary character of the work and bridging the gap between literature and film.

An important and often underappreciated Steinbeck title here preserved in its original form with the dust jacket-an increasingly elusive survival in collectible condition.

Goldstone & Payne A15.
