An anonymously published historical novel purporting to be the diary of a sixteenth century lady Marion Drayton. The first edition of this work. An uncommon work which is a Victorian imitation of a sixteenth century diary. The syntax and spelling loosely resembles that of the early modern era as an attempt to convince the reader they are reading a diary. Undated dated from Copac. Copac entries date the work at either 1853 or 1854. Dated from the 1854 listing of Cambridge University and the National Library of Scotland. This diary of one Marian Drayton is said to have been written from 1553-1559 and was published from the manuscript by her nephew Richard Falkenridge in 1592 as stated to the preface. A fascinating historical novel from the Victorian period. In a full tooled morocco binding. Externally smart. Rebacked with the original boards and backstrip preserved. Light rubbing to the boards. Hinges have been reinforced. Prior owners' inscriptions to the recto of front endpaper M A Wilkinson M E Milward and E M Pugh. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges.
